First Flight: the Early Aviators - Disciples of Flight - 0 views

    • docderz

Solid overview of the early history of aviation, leading up to the Wright Brothers.
  • The dream of flying is as old as humankind itself. Throughout our history, we have struggled to achieve flight. And it wasn’t until fairly recently in our history that we achieved the first flight. We started with balloons, followed with gliders, and eventually developed powered aircraft. The story of this achievement is a fascinating one, with many players such as the Wright Brothers being well established. However, their historic first flight at Kitty Hawk in 1903 may not have actually been the first powered flight. In this three part series, Disciples of Flight is going to look at the question of who achieved the first flight with a powered aircraft. In part one, First Flight: The Early Aviators, we will look at the development of flight leading up to the Wright Brothers. Part two, First Flight: the Wright Brothers, will give a brief history of the brothers, and cover their first flight. And part three, First Flight: Gustave Whitehead, will cover the bold claims of Gustave Whitehead, and others, to first flight.

NASA Space Programs - Shuttle Tile - 0 views

  •
Shuttle Tile: Space Shuttle thermal protective tiles are being offered only to eligible schools, universities, and colleges on a first-come, first-serve, one per institution, basis while the supply lasts. NASA is looking for ways to preserve this great history and inspire the next generation of space explorers, scientists and engineers. On Dec. 1, 2010, your school or university can sign up and request a space shuttle thermal protective tile. Remember, the tiles are available on a first-come, first-served, one-per-institution basis. Educators have an opportunity to share some technology and a piece of history with their students.

How does a plane stay in the air? - Naked Science Scrapbook - YouTube - 1 views

"Being able to fly off on holiday is something we may take for granted. But how does the big metal tube you're flying in stay up in the air? We'll find out in the latest Naked Science Scrapbook. Plus we'll see that if the plane's engines stop working, you won't just plummet out of the sky"

"Personal observations on the reliability of the Shuttle by R. P. Feynman Introduction It appears that there are enormous differences of opinion as to the probability of a failure with loss of vehicle and of human life. The estimates range from roughly 1 in 100 to 1 in 100,000. The higher figures come from the working engineers, and the very low figures from management. What are the causes and consequences of this lack of agreement? Since 1 part in 100,000 would imply that one could put a Shuttle up each day for 300 years expecting to lose only one, we could properly ask "What is the cause of management's fantastic faith in the machinery?""

"Amelia Rose Earhart says she "knew" after taking a first flight lesson in 2004 that she and her famous ancestor had more than a name in common. Now a private pilot training for an instrument rating, Earhart launched Dec. 26 on the first legs of a flight designed to recreate some of the milestones that led up to Amelia Mary Earhart's 1937 attempt to encircle the globe. "An electromagnet is a type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by the flow of electric current. The magnetic field disappears when the current is turned off. Electromagnets are widely used as components of other electrical devices, such as motors, generators, relays, loudspeakers, hard disks, MRI machines, scientific instruments, and magnetic separation equipment, as well as being employed as industrial lifting electromagnets for picking up and moving heavy iron objects like scrap iron."

Educational-Blogging wiki - 2 views

  •
a resource for teachers who are interested in having a classroom blog. The wiki includes class videos explaining the benefits of blogging, how to compose a quality comment, and the importance of the Creative Commons license. I chronicle the steps I've taken to teach my students how to compose quality comments and have tips to help teachers develop their own online communities. Included are links to other educational bloggers and sample posts organized by subject matter. I hope that teachers will find the wiki helpful and will open up their classrooms through educational blogging.

Home Labs Rise With Smarter and Cheaper Devices - 0 views

home laboratories have tools like infrared thermometers Many of these tools work closely with home computers and come with software that enhances their power. Others mix low-cost computers into the hardware to deliver more precise control. Some people who set up home laboratories are serious hobbyists in search of better tools; others are home-schooling parents equipping their children; and others are just curious.
