"10 Teams Officially Registered for 2011 CAFE Green Flight Challenge The CAFE Foundation has completed Design Review and registration for 10 teams to compete in the 2011 flight competition. These teams include one major university and are from states all across the USA. Their sizes vary widely, as can be seen in the table below. As hoped, teams will campaign with a wide range of energy sources; mogas, diesel, bio-diesel, hydrogen and electricity. The qualifications of the team leaders and members are very impressive."

Build the Station Simulation: Educator Guide -- Grades K-8 Just as five space agencies cooperated to build the International Space Station, students can work together to build a paper model of the world's largest orbiting laboratory. Teams take on the roles of international partners as they learn about and assemble portions of the model. During a mock summit, each team briefs the group about their section of the model. The teams then assemble the entire model to complete the space station. The guide includes student sheets, parts of the model, instructions for holding a summit, and facts about the station.

Follow the Desert RATS Team During Analog Testing The NASA Desert Research and Technology Studies team, also known as Desert RATS, marks its fourteenth annual field test and the first time a mission to an asteroid will be simulated. While NASA has landed astronauts on the moon and rovers on Mars, the agency is only beginning to tackle the challenges of visiting an asteroid. Desert RATS team members will conduct simulated human and robotic space exploration test activities in extreme Arizona terrain to investigate and develop realistic technical and mission-driven operations similar to those of an asteroid mission.

Hercules and the Four Horsemen Filmed in 1960 - The Four Horsemen were the world's only four engine per aircraft demonstration team. Flying four C-130As in close formation, the team would perform a number of maneuvers over a twenty-three minute airshow that closed with a bomb burst -- or as the team called it, Horseman Burst. The show was performed at an altitude of 500 to 1,000 feet.

"Student teams investigate biomedical engineering and the technology of prosthetics. Students create a model prosthetic lower leg using various materials. Each team demonstrate its prosthesis' strength and consider its pros and cons, giving insight into the characteristics and materials biomedical engineers consider in designing artificial limbs. "

"In the future, a swarm of flying robots may do the work now done by human search teams. A robotics research team at the University of Pennsylvania has designed a system to coordinate a number of small quadcopters, a step toward coordinating multiple robots for tasks such as surveillance or searching areas after a disaster. "

This team building exercise was inspired by the Marshmallow Challange, as seen on TED 2010 (www.marshmallowchallenge.com/Welcome.html). The game is designed to have kids quickly work together to model and prototype ideas, evaluate scoring strategies, determine design limitations, etc... It was intentionally designed to force students (and mentors, too!) to evaluate priorities and assumptions.

This is the first time I have heard the radio chatter while the team performs their maneuvers. it is used to alert the team of changes made by the leader in power settings, control stick pressure, and to remind of the next maneuver to be performed as well as the timing of entry and exit.
