the Navy successfully got an F/A-18E Super Hornet airborne using its new-model catapult, the Electromagnetic Aviation Launch System, or EMALS. not only is the new launch system supposed to be more efficient than steam, it's better capable to launch small drones as well as big planes, giving aircraft carriers a broader range of options.
Earth, our Sun and solar system, and the universe out to its farthest reaches and back to its earliest moments of existence. NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) and the nation's science community use space observatories to conduct scientific studies of the Earth from space to visit and return samples from other bodies in the solar system, and to peer out into our Galaxy and beyond. NASA's science program seeks answers to profound questions that touch us all
"this organic star dust is similar in structure to complex organic compounds found in meteorites. Since meteorites are remnants of the early Solar System, the findings raise the possibility that stars enriched the early Solar System with organic compounds. The early Earth was subjected to severe bombardments by comets and asteroids, which potentially could have carried organic star dust. Whether these delivered organic compounds played any role in the development of life on Earth remains an open question."
Solar System Magnetism Demonstration -- Grades 5-8
The big idea of this demonstration is that the sun and Earth have different magnetic properties. Sunspots are related to magnetism on the sun. Earth has a strong simple magnetic field with two poles. The educator builds the magnetic fields using polystyrene spheres, strong magnets and staples. Then the participants make "field detectors" from simple objects to predict the locations of the fields.
"The Voyager 1 spacecraft's 35th anniversary is proving to be unexpectedly exciting, as scientists gathered this week to examine new hints that the spacecraft is on the verge of leaving our solar system.
Voyager 1 is now more than 11 billion miles away from Earth. It blasted off in September 1977, on a mission to Jupiter and Saturn. But it also carried a Golden Record filled with music and the sounds of our planet, in case it encountered intelligent life as it moved out toward the stars."
"Meraki lets you centrally manage mobile devices, macs and PC's from the cloud based dashboard. The systems manager makes it simple to centrally manage applications on iOS, Android, Mac and PC devices. It integrates with Google Play, Amazon Appstore, Apple App Store and Apple's Volume Purchase Program. In addition to being able to manage apps, Meraki makes it easy to enforce and deploy restrictions on mobile devices. Choose how your students access the app store, gaming and content, how they connect wirelessly, security settings and remote VPN access."
"The team, led by Professor Simon Cox, consisted of Richard Boardman, Andy Everett, Steven Johnston, Gereon Kaiping, Neil O'Brien, Mark Scott and Oz Parchment, along with Professor Cox's son James Cox (aged 6) who provided specialist support on Lego and system testing."
"low-cost, multi-unit, home-made 3D radar system, Budisteanu was able to achieve excellent results. In fact, the vehicle performed flawlessly in 47 of 50 simulations, only failing to recognize some people at a distance of 20 to 30 meters.
For Budisteanu's efforts, he was awarded $75,000, and a Romanian company has already offered to fund his research and give him the opportunity to create a prototype driverless car. "
"Dr. Glenn Green, associate professor of pediatric otolaryngology, and Scott Hollister, professor of biomedical engineering & mechanical engineering and associate professor of surgery - used pioneering technology to come up with a solution. The University of Michigan Health System says Green and Hollister took a CT scan of Kaiba's trachea/bronchus and then created a tracheal splint using 3D printing."
"For the past 10 years, Tufts Center for Engineering Education and Outreach has been working with the LEGO Group to bring engineering into every classroom as a way to teach creativity, teamwork, and systems engineering as well as math, science, and literacy. "
"additive manufacturing as a means to bring social benefits to the developing world. The students designed Big Red, a 3-D printer that takes shredded plastic waste, melts it, and uses it as its "ink" to print composting toilets and parts for rainwater collection systems"
