NASA | Art: 50 Years of Exploration Exhibit For almost 50 years, artists participating in the NASA art program have been documenting the extraordinary adventure of spaceflight in ways no camera could match. They have enjoyed access to some epic moments and offered their unique perspectives on what they have witnessed. The NASA art collection, shared now by the space agency and the National Air and Space Museum, stands as a reminder of pioneering years of the early Space Age and an inspiration for those who will continue our long journey into the universe. The exhibition includes approximately 70 paintings, drawings, photographs and pieces of sculpture by such artists as Annie Leibovitz, Nam June Paik, Robert Rauschenberg, Norman Rockwell, Andy Warhol and Jamie Wyeth.

Electron flow vs. current flow - 0 views

  •
"It depends on what you define as "electricity". Do you mean the flow of "electrons" or the flow of "current"? Because, due to an unfortunate quirk of history, the direction of *current* flow is opposite to the direction of *electron* flow. "

How Many Leaves on the Tree of Life? - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
"scientists at Dalhousie University, concludes that there are about 8.7 million species on Earth. The team analyzed the numerical relationship between species, genus, family and order in well-studied life-forms and used that pattern to estimate the number of species in categories of life that haven't been well studied. Some scientists argue that that almost surely underestimates some lesser-known classes of life. Only some 1.25 million species have been described in the 253 years since Linnaeus devised the method we use to name them. This means that if there are, indeed, roughly 8.7 million species over all, nearly 90 percent of the species on Earth have not yet been discovered and described. "

Longitudinal and Transverse Wave Motion - 0 views

  •
"Mechanical Waves are waves which propagate through a material medium (solid, liquid, or gas) at a wave speed which depends on the elastic and inertial properties of that medium. There are two basic types of wave motion for mechanical waves: longitudinal waves and transverse waves. The animations below demonstrate both types of wave and illustrate the difference between the motion of the wave and the motion of the particles in the medium through which the wave is travelling."

Math as Art - Homeschool Argentina - 0 views

"mathematics. It is every bit as mind blowing as cosmology or physics (mathematicians conceived of black holes long before astronomers actually found any), and allows more freedom of expression than poetry, art, or music (which depend heavily on properties of the physical universe). Mathematics is the purest of the arts, as well as the most misunderstood. http://www.maa.org/devlin/LockhartsLament.pdf Please read this long but enjoyable and very thought provoking essay from Paul Lockhart - it will change your idea of what education should be."

Duxford Spitfire and P-51 Taken at Duxford RAF and USAAC Museum in England. Two of the greatest WWII fighter planes of their era....the American P51 Mustang and the British Supermarine Spitfire. Both planes were powered by the powerful Rolls Royce Merlin engine......which emitted that wonderful sound that became known to many as 'The Sound of Freedom' during the 1940s. Such memories for those of us who were around at the time. P-51 pilot does a great job staying in his position as he has more power and is faster than the spitfire. they must have done a bit of practicing.

"For scientists and engineers in the new social robots field, finding out what gives a robot the appearance of emotion or personality is essential. In the case of these little LEGO walking bots, it is mostly a matter of the way they move. The particular motions and speed create a pattern of movement that we interpret as a personality"

It houses diverse examples of the perverse genius of inventors who refused to let their thinking be intimidated by the laws of nature, remaining optimistic in the face of repeated failures. Watch and be amazed as we bring to life eccentric and even intricate perpetual motion machines that have remained steadfastly unmoving since their inception."

"As we approach the Mars rover Curiosity's landing Sunday night, we're having a lot of fun seeing all the promotions - there are all kinds of videos, museum exhibits and road shows to help explain what the newest interplanetary explorer will do. Below is a great new one from the American Chemical Society. Curiosity is a well-equipped geologist, traveling to Mars with a suite of tools to bake and pulverize rock, but it's also a trained chemist, capable of detecting the ingredients necessary for life as we know it. It's the first explorer to be able to do this. "
