"my engineering classes. "Perspectives on the Evolution of Structures" was definitely one of my favorites. It is taught by Dr. Schafer, my adviser and head of the department, and is typically taken by freshmen in their spring semester. The course covers the three "E"s of civil engineering design: economy, elegance, and efficiency. It's cross-listed through MICA, so you get the best of both engineering and artistic perspectives, while going through a history of design principles."

"7puzzle is a unique product as the contents of the game are kept in an eco-friendly distinctive black/lilac bag. This keeps the playing board clean and tidy, making it extremely difficult for the owner to lose the playing pieces. The playing board is a 7 by 7 grid of 49 squares, each containing a number, colour and shape. When taking on the challenges, players must place all of the 14 playing pieces (7 of which are straight and 7 angled) onto the board, therefore leaving seven spaces. The intention is that everything on the board will be covered up, except seven of a certain element, which may be a particular colour, shape or type of number, depending on the challenge undertaken."

The brainchild of Ge-Chen Zha of the University of Miami, the "supersonic, bi-directional flying wing" recently landed a $100,000 NASA grant to continue development of a concept that could cut the New York to Tokyo travel time to four hours-and perhaps significantly faster than that, Zha said."

The controversial "demotion" of Pluto was mainly the result of discoveries by a team of astronomers led by Michael Brown. In this talk, Dr. Brown will share the inside story of how he discovered "other Pluto's" out there beyond Neptune, including Eris, larger than Pluto,which he later named for the goddess of discord. Because, as he'll describe with his characteristic humor, its discovery resulted in a private and public controversy which led to the redefinition of what a planet is.

The purpose of the Open Video Project is to collect and make available a repository of digitized video content for the digital video, multimedia retrieval, digital library, and other research communities. Researchers can use the video to study a wide range of problems, such as tests of algorithms for automatic segmentation, summarization, and creation of surrogates that describe video content; the development of face recognition algorithms; or creating and evaluating interfaces that display result sets from multimedia queries. Because researchers attempting to solve similar problems will have access to the same video content, the repository is also intended to be used as a test collection that will enable systems to be compared, similar to the way the TREC conferences are used for text retrieval.

"The very rare sight of seven full-size WW1 Fokker Dr.1 Triplanes replicas in the air together. Each of these aircraft is painted to represent one of the aircraft/pilots that flew as part of Manfred von Richthofen's Jasta 11 in April 1918. As far as we know this is only the second time since 1918 that seven of these aircraft have been seen in the air together at one time (the first time was in 2007)."

Workers look at the TBM cutterhead after it reached daylight in April 1997, after a 2.5-year journey excavating through Yucca Mountain, NV. TBM is a tunnel boring machine. Students apply their knowledge about mountains and rocks to transportation engineering, with the task of developing a model mountain tunnel that simulates the principles behind real-life engineering design. Student teams design and create model tunnels through a clay mountain, working within design constraints and testing for success; the tunnels must meet specific design requirements and withstand a certain load. "

"Dr. Glenn Green, associate professor of pediatric otolaryngology, and Scott Hollister, professor of biomedical engineering & mechanical engineering and associate professor of surgery - used pioneering technology to come up with a solution. The University of Michigan Health System says Green and Hollister took a CT scan of Kaiba's trachea/bronchus and then created a tracheal splint using 3D printing."

"The Inventing Our Future of Flight competition ("the Challenge") is an academic building competition where the LEGO Group and NASA will challenge the fans of NASA to a develop a LEGO® prototype of their own aircraft of tomorrow along with a technical research paper to explain your ideas. The competition will begin at June 5th 2013 and the submission period ends July 31st 2013. Winners will be announced September 1st 2013."

"My school required us to assess more than only Level 1 DOK (Depth of Knowledge). This assessment reflects Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 Depth of Knowledge questions for each of the standards within the 2nd Grade Common Core math standards. Many of the questions require students to make decisions of how to approach a problem and typically require two-step procedures."
