"my engineering classes. "Perspectives on the Evolution of Structures" was definitely one of my favorites. It is taught by Dr. Schafer, my adviser and head of the department, and is typically taken by freshmen in their spring semester. The course covers the three "E"s of civil engineering design: economy, elegance, and efficiency. It's cross-listed through MICA, so you get the best of both engineering and artistic perspectives, while going through a history of design principles."

7puzzle - 0 views

  •
"7puzzle is a unique product as the contents of the game are kept in an eco-friendly distinctive black/lilac bag. This keeps the playing board clean and tidy, making it extremely difficult for the owner to lose the playing pieces. The playing board is a 7 by 7 grid of 49 squares, each containing a number, colour and shape. When taking on the challenges, players must place all of the 14 playing pieces (7 of which are straight and 7 angled) onto the board, therefore leaving seven spaces. The intention is that everything on the board will be covered up, except seven of a certain element, which may be a particular colour, shape or type of number, depending on the challenge undertaken."

New take on 'X' plane wins NASA grant - 0 views

  •
"Cleared for Mach 2 after departure, this supersonic jet of the future would yaw 90 degrees and put a new set of wings into the wind. The brainchild of Ge-Chen Zha of the University of Miami, the "supersonic, bi-directional flying wing" recently landed a $100,000 NASA grant to continue development of a concept that could cut the New York to Tokyo travel time to four hours-and perhaps significantly faster than that, Zha said."

OUTER SPACE TREATY - 0 views

  •
"The Outer Space Treaty, as it is known, was the second of the so-called "nonarmament" treaties; its concepts and some of its provisions were modeled on its predecessor, the Antarctic Treaty. Like that Treaty it sought to prevent "a new form of colonial competition" and the possible damage that self-seeking exploitation might cause. In early 1957, even before the launching of Sputnik in October, developments in rocketry led the United States to propose international verification of the testing of space objects."

Disposable Drones Will Collect Data by Surfing Along with Hurricanes - IEEE Spectrum - 0 views

  •
"These robots, made of carbon fiber, are just six inches long and don't weigh much more than an iPod Nano. Hardware on board measures pressure, temperature, humidity, location and time, all to help predict the trajectory and intensity of hurricanes. Since just one of these robots isn't nearly enough to get a good sense of a hurricane, they're designed to be used in swarms of tens or hundreds, collecting massive amounts of data while creating their own autonomous network."

Build A Plane Takes Off! - Plane & Pilot Magazine - 0 views

  •
Conversations with adults and kids around the country have reiterated that the basics of the Build A Plane idea are viable and remain the same: * There is an overwhelming number of teenage kids in America who would be excited to join a Build A Plane project. * There is an overwhelming number of adults who are willing and capable of mentoring Build A Plane programs. * There is a huge supply of aircraft that are no longer flown or are not airworthy and would make great project planes. * There are hundreds of kit aircraft that are purchased, but never completed. * Owners who donate aircraft not only give a wonderful gift, but also may qualify for tax benefits from Uncle Sam.

Beginner's Guide to Aerodynamics - 0 views

  •
study aerodynamics at your own pace and to your own level of interest. Some of the topics included are: Newton's basic equations of motion; the motion of a free falling object, that neglects the effects of aerodynamics; the terminal velocity of a falling object subject to both weight and air resistance; the three forces (lift, drag, and weight) that act on a glider; and finally, the four forces that act on a powered airplane.

How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming - 0 views

  •
The controversial "demotion" of Pluto was mainly the result of discoveries by a team of astronomers led by Michael Brown. In this talk, Dr. Brown will share the inside story of how he discovered "other Pluto's" out there beyond Neptune, including Eris, larger than Pluto, which he later named for the goddess of discord. Because, as he'll describe with his characteristic humor, its discovery resulted in a private and public controversy which led to the redefinition of what a planet is.

The Open Video Project :: Project Information - 0 views

  •
The purpose of the Open Video Project is to collect and make available a repository of digitized video content for the digital video, multimedia retrieval, digital library, and other research communities. Researchers can use the video to study a wide range of problems, such as tests of algorithms for automatic segmentation, summarization, and creation of surrogates that describe video content; the development of face recognition algorithms; or creating and evaluating interfaces that display result sets from multimedia queries. Because researchers attempting to solve similar problems will have access to the same video content, the repository is also intended to be used as a test collection that will enable systems to be compared, similar to the way the TREC conferences are used for text retrieval.

NOVA | Build a Bridge - 1 views

  •
"Four open spans need bridges. You've just been put in charge of deciding which type of bridge is best for each of those four spans. Are you up to the task? Let's find out. First, you'll want to take a good look at each site. Then you'll want to research each of the four kinds of bridges that you can choose from. Only then will you be ready to try your hand at building a bridge-actually four of them! Follow the steps below: "

Seven Fokker Dr.1 Triplanes of Jasta 11 - YouTube - 0 views

  •
"The very rare sight of seven full-size WW1 Fokker Dr.1 Triplanes replicas in the air together. Each of these aircraft is painted to represent one of the aircraft/pilots that flew as part of Manfred von Richthofen's Jasta 11 in April 1918. As far as we know this is only the second time since 1918 that seven of these aircraft have been seen in the air together at one time (the first time was in 2007)."

The Women of NASA (WON) Langley Reseach Center (LaRC) website! The WON LaRC website showcases diversified, professional (civil service) women from NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) many of which support NASA outreach programs such as the LaRC Federal Women's Program Committee, the LaRC Speakers Bureau, the HEP@NASA LaRC program, and LaRC Diversity Awareness Committee. Read the WON profiles of the diverse women working at our NASA center and some of the reviews from their student/teacher/parent visitors. Don't forget to frequently visit this page to read about the latest participants since this list of profiles is sure to grow!

Tunnel Through! - Activity - www.TeachEngineering.org - 0 views

  •
"Tunnel Through! Contributed by: Integrated Teaching and Learning Program, College of Engineering, University of Colorado at Boulder Photo shows two men looking at metal prongs coming through the side of a mountain with a crumbling rock pile in front of them. Workers look at the TBM cutterhead after it reached daylight in April 1997, after a 2.5-year journey excavating through Yucca Mountain, NV. TBM is a tunnel boring machine. Students apply their knowledge about mountains and rocks to transportation engineering, with the task of developing a model mountain tunnel that simulates the principles behind real-life engineering design. Student teams design and create model tunnels through a clay mountain, working within design constraints and testing for success; the tunnels must meet specific design requirements and withstand a certain load. "explore forces acting on an object, to practice graphing experimental data, and/or to introduce the algebra concepts of slope and intercept of a line. A wooden 2x4 beam is set on top of two scales. Students learn how to conduct an experiment by applying loads at different locations along the beam, recording the exact position of the applied load and the reaction forces measured by the scales at each end of the beam"

2nd Grade Common Core Math Assessment (3 tests/standard), ALL STANDARDS - Alyssha Swans... - 0 views

  •
"My school required us to assess more than only Level 1 DOK (Depth of Knowledge). This assessment reflects Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 Depth of Knowledge questions for each of the standards within the 2nd Grade Common Core math standards. Many of the questions require students to make decisions of how to approach a problem and typically require two-step procedures."
