"The Build a Plane project has grown wings since last summer when it was introduced as an idea for students to learn more about the aviation industry in Talkeetna. "Our school was treated to a visit by Barrington Irving, the first African-American pilot to fly solo around the world, who spoke to our students during a school-wide assembly in the fall of 2008. He provided the inspiration that spurred our Principal, Jeanne Fischer, to comment to Angie Slingluff, FAA Education Coordinator, that she would love to bring a project like that to our middle school.
