Numberphile: a series of numberly videos - 1 views

  •
"What it is: Numberphile is a series of "numberly" videos by Brady Haran. This is the same guy behind some other great projects including periodicvideos and sixtysymbols. These videos reveal some of the mystery behind numbers and math in fun, short snippets! I could give a long, drawn out explanation about the site…but really, you should go have a look and play a few videos."

The Physics Behind Waterslides - 0 views

  •
National Geographic takes a high-level look at the physics behind waterslides. A lot of science goes into providing a safe 60 mph trip down slides like Walt Disney World's 10-story Summit Plummet. 'Safety is our number one concern,' explains Rick Hunter of ProSlide Technology. 'We're thinking about things like, "are you going to stay on the fiberglass tube," it's really easy to do a computer model and look at curves and drops and forecast rider position and speed.

Tunnel Through! - Activity - www.TeachEngineering.org - 0 views

  •
"Tunnel Through! Contributed by: Integrated Teaching and Learning Program, College of Engineering, University of Colorado at Boulder Photo shows two men looking at metal prongs coming through the side of a mountain with a crumbling rock pile in front of them. Workers look at the TBM cutterhead after it reached daylight in April 1997, after a 2.5-year journey excavating through Yucca Mountain, NV. TBM is a tunnel boring machine. Students apply their knowledge about mountains and rocks to transportation engineering, with the task of developing a model mountain tunnel that simulates the principles behind real-life engineering design. Student teams design and create model tunnels through a clay mountain, working within design constraints and testing for success; the tunnels must meet specific design requirements and withstand a certain load. Revelstoke Dam - 0 views

"For Civil Engineers, the alchemy of earth, rock, steel and concrete formed by man to hold back and harness that most powerful force of nature, water; is an awesome sight to behold, worthy of photographing, inspiring the young and old to imagine the weight of the wall of water behind the stark grey walls, wondering at the cold, murky depths below the calm surface. On a quiet day, the dam can seem tame. The moving parts are hidden away, only a faint hum or vibration may be evidence of the great transformation from potential to kinetic to electric energy taking place below your feet. Looking downstream, the flow of the river continues, thousands of cubic meters of water"

"I originally stumbled into the environmental engineering major because I could write a good college essay about it (not kidding). Once I actually began researching the major, I decided it was for me. Environmental engineering is a relatively new field that is guaranteed to grow in the future because of an increased demand to go green (aka job openings). I have always loved the outdoors and want to have a job where I can help people and not be stuck behind a desk, which I believe I can find in the environmental engineering field."

"Engineering offers more career options than any other discipline. It's a profession that can take you from the depths of the ocean to the far reaches of outer space, from within the microscopic structures of the human cell to the top of the tallest skyscrapers. Whether it's cell phones, digital cameras, DVD's, or facial recognition devices that can pick out a terrorist in a crowded football stadium, engineers are behind almost all of today's exciting technology. Engineers are problem solvers who search for quicker, better, and less expensive ways to use the forces and materials of nature to meet today's challenges. Engineering students have their pick of many fields. From electrical to civil to aeronautical to biomedical, every discipline within engineering will lead to an exciting and rewarding career. In this activity, you will research one type of engineering"

NASA - Flying Formation - Around the Moon at 3,600 MPH - 0 views

  •
"Essentially, trail formation means one aircraft (or spacecraft in this case), follows directly behind the other. Ebb and Flow, the twins of NASA's GRAIL (Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory) mission, are by no means the first to synch up altitude and "air" speed while zipping over the craters, mountains, hills and rills of Earth's natural satellite. Voyager 1 at the final frontier - 0 views

  •
"For nearly 35 years, NASA's Voyager 1 probe has been hurtling toward the edge of the solar system, flying through the dark void on a mission unlike anything attempted before. One day, mission controllers hope, Voyager 1 will leave the solar system behind and enter the realm of the stars-interstellar space. "

AOPA Online: Could FanWing go from LSA to heavy lifter? - 1 views

  •
The FanWing looks like someone has put the blades of a combine harvester behind a helicopter cockpit and forgotten about the rest of the fuselage. That combine harvester, the FanWing propulsion system, is a fan in a wing, making it a thick wing that provides lift and thrust.
