Database resource: It's said that in a recession, people opt for old-world comforts. While in the electronic world there isn't much that's old world, the librarians who responded to this year's call for best-database nominations name some mainstays that are likely to inspire some e-nostalgia. Consumer Reports, CultureGrams, and Guide to Reference are resources we've relied upon in libraries for years, and their electronic incarnations are now bringing solid, back-in-the-day reference to the Wikipedia generation.

Nic Bishop: Snakes are tricky creatures, both to photograph and to handle. Their long, thin bodies and surface-hugging habits create challenges for photographers, and their nervous natures don't permit easy interaction, especially for those of us carrying cameras. Even a medium-sized creature will win at wrestling.

Book Reviews brings together in one place the best children's and young adults' book reviews published in several countries. Thank you to all the magazines and websites for sharing with us their great content!

Here are a few non-fiction texts that I would include in an intermediate grade classroom library.  Some of these texts you might want to group together into a read aloud text set or as a set of inquiry texts that students would read together in small groups.

YouTube has a firm place in the current classroom. From Khan Academy's videos to YouTube EDU and beyond, there's a reason all these videos are finding a home in schools. In an effort to help keep the ball rolling, Google just launched a set of 10 interactive lessons designed to support teachers in educating students on digital citizenship. A topic obviously quite close to Google's heart.

Educreations is one of the top contenders, teachers say, mostly because of its simple user interface and multi-functionality. "I use it when I need to make quick videos in class," said Ramsey Musallam, a high school chemistry teacher in San Francisco. Other features that teachers seem to love: the app offers more than one page for recording; the user can import images from other places and format them easily within the video; there's a text feature so students don't have to contend with messy teacher handwriting, and perhaps best of all, it can be used on desktop computers, not just an iPad.
