MT. VERNON - Youth from all four Jefferson County high schools were able to find out more about careers by shadowing business people in the community on Thursday during Youth and Business Day, sponsored by the Elks. This year, the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce worked with the Elks to promote the program to area youth.

On Thursday, Linton Mayor Tom Jones signed a proclamation recognizing Municipal Government Week. To kick off this celebration, Jones and the directors of all city departments were on hand to welcome Linton-Stockton students from grades 5 through 12. These students were selected by their respective classroom teachers to participate in the Elks Government Day.

A full year before the notorious and legendary Elks Lodge Riot, there were indeed completely successful punk rock gigs held at downtown LA's Elk Lodge -- and by successful, I mean no police interruptions. One such set of gigs include the February 24 and 25 benefits for The Masque at the Elks Lodge. Many of the artists who performed are featured in today's photos (none of these pix are from the Elks Lodge show, however).

EEOC Sues Illinois Elks Lodge For Sexual Harassment The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ("EEOC") is suing a southwestern Illinois Elks Lodge, alleging three board members sexually harassed three female bartenders. In its lawsuit (Case No. 3:09-cv-00200), filed in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis, Illinois, the EEOC claims that Vicki Vickers, Elizabeth Stemm, and Jackie Davidson (formerly Jackie Atteberry at the time of her employment by defendant) were subjected to unlawful sexual harassment while working at Elks Lodge No. 954 by three members of the Elks' board of trustees on numerous occasions in 2005 and 2006.

Bobbie Galbraith has been an active member of the Petaluma Elks Lodge No. 901 for eight years, but never imagined that she'd be nominated as the club's first woman to serve as exalted ruler (president). PASADENA - For the past century, men have been running things at Pasadena's Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. That all changed Tuesday night with the installation of Exalted Ruler Virginia Quintero, the first woman in Lodge #672 to reach the top job. "I finally made it there," Quintero said before the ceremony and presentation of her jewels of office - "and the gavel, of course." "I'm very excited, very happy ... and my family's all excited," the 63-year-old nurse said of her elevation to Exalted Ruler. "I don't think they'll treat me differently - but I hope they might," she joked.

WOONSOCKET - The city and Woonsocket Lodge of Elks will host their annual children's fishing derby on Saturday, April 11, the first day of fishing season. The event takes place at Cass Park pond, where the state Department of Environmental Management has stocked trout.

An area resident, with the help of the local Elks lodge and American Heart Association, recently presented life-saving equipment to Wethersfield and Rocky Hill schools. The gift was part of a drive led by Portland resident Kevin Sweeney on behalf of the Larry Pontbriant Jr. Athletic Safety Fund. The fund is named after the son of a close friend of Sweeney's. The younger Pontrbriant of Norwich, died running cross country at age 15.

Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge No. 2815 hosted lunch for 28 veterans from the blind and the geriatrics centers of the Tucson VA Hospital earlier this month. Veterans Service Committee Chairman Billy Tyre organized the April 4 event with help from Lodge House Committee members, who prepared Mexican food at the veterans' request.

Fond du Lac Elks Lodge 57, of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, is hosting the 2009 State Spring Convention of the Wisconsin Elks Association. The Dover Elks Lodge will be hosting a series of special events to honor the youth of our community. The Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks (B.P.O.E.) is a national organization committed to recognizing the accomplishments of our young people. This year the Lodge will be awarding over $16,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors in the area.
