The Elks club picked eight high school seniors to pair up with local leaders for the annual Elks' Youth Leadership Day. Six of the students were from Bayonne High School, one was from Holy Family Academy, and one from St. Peter's Prep.

The Somerville Elks Lodge Scholarship Committee supports the students of local high schools by providing financial scholarships to outstanding kids, based on their academic achievements and moral character. The administration of each school is charged with selecting the students to receive our awards.

"MILLSTONE - Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) members often joke that the acronym for their group actually stands for "Best People On Earth." BPOE makes many contributions to the community, the latest of which are four wheelchairs, worth $1,500, for students in need in the Millstone Township School District. The BPOE presented the donation at the Dec. 14 Board of Education meeting. "

Beaver Dam Elks are among the Elks in the nation passing out dictionaries to third-grade students. Exalted ruler Rob Radig said the number of students who are getting the dictionaries has increased dramatically over last year. "BRANDON - Brandon Elks Lodge 2383 will have presented dictionaries to 300 third-graders at Alafia and Nelson elementary schools and Nativity Catholic School by Oct. 16, the anniversary of dictionary writer Noah Webster's birth. Inside the cover of each book is the Elks' motto: "Elks Care-Elks Share" and the lodge name."

Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge #2815 has presented scholarships to eight Northwest students. Five students earned Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Contest scholarships. Justin Haley, who attends Ironwood Ridge High School, received a $4,000 scholarship and is competing as a national finalist. Pusch Ridge Christian Academy students Victoria Johnston, Jordan Thompson and Morgan Van Stelle each received $1,000 awards for use at the college of their choice, as did Russell Smith from Canyon del Oro High School. All students were selected based upon their academic achievements and leadership skills as well as their participation in community affairs, a release said.

The summer golf calendar is filled with a myriad of benefit tournaments, but only a handful encompass such a worthy cause as the Arizona Elks Association Social Welfare Clothe-a-Child event. All the proceeds are used to purchase clothing for needy and disadvantaged children. "This is a statewide program, some of our clubs do it (donate clothes) at Christmas and some before the first day of school," said tournament chairman Becky Waer. "We do it through the schools, so it is kind of a confidential thing."

The Watertown Elks are distributing free dictionary reference books to all of the public school third-grade classes in Watertown, Jefferson, Johnson Creek and Lake Mills. The local Dictionary Project is being funded through a donation from the Watertown Elks Lodge. The idea for The Dictionary Project began in 1992 when Annie Plummer of Savannah, Ga., gave 50 dictionaries to children who attended a school close to her home. Each year she continued to give this gift, raising money to help give more and more books so that in her lifetime she raised enough money to buy 17,000 dictionaries for children in Savannah.

Elks will act as mentors in the program while providing learning opportunities and teaching community-building skills. Building a Better Future will be funded by an Impact Grant awarded to the Florence Elks by the Elks National Foundation, the charitable arm of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Impact Grants are designed to help Elks make a difference in their community."

Computer classes are offered to seniors, so updated machines are greatly appreciated to further knowledge. To date, the joint venture between Willimantic and Groton Lodges has also donated over 60 computers to local police and fire departments."

"All told, 130 families and individuals received care boxes. Eric Clark, 26, delivered boxes with Hooper. He has been delivering them on Christmas Eve since he was young. He enlisted in the Navy shortly after graduating from high school and returned home from Japan, where he is stationed, for the holidays."
