The All American city now has its own world class bicycle racing track. The Santa Maria Elks BMX Racing Team hosted the first major event at its new Elks Unocal Events Center BMX track on Saturday.

"Tiffin Elks Lodge 94 is celebrating 127 years in Tiffin. Exalted Ruler Joe Steinmetz, who joined the lodge seven years ago, is helping plan the event with other members. Why celebrate 127 years? "We want to commemorate 127 years of benevolence in Tiffin and celebrate another 100 years of active involvement in our community," Steinmetz said. Friday, dinner and live entertainment will take place for members and guests. Events Saturday are open to the public at 106 E. Perry St. Indoor and outdoor activities are to continue all day Saturday, with proceeds to benefit Disabled American Veterans. At 8 a.m., registration opens for a 5K run or 1K walk. An opening ceremony is at 9:30 a.m. and the race steps off at 10 a.m., following a route along Riverside Drive and downtown Tiffin. Registration for the 5K and 1K can be done up to the day of the race at $15 per person. The age groups are: 12 and under; 13-19; 20-34; 35-50; and over 50. Forms can be obtained at the Elks, Clover Club, Madison Street Tavern, Varsity Barber Shop, Champs Barber Shop, Pit Stop, Reino's and Ace Hardware. Checks should be made payable to Tiffin Elks Lodge 94. A grill and beverage bar opens at noon to serve all day. A mini-golf challenge and cornhole tournament are to begin at 1 p.m. in the parking lot. The cost is $20 per team for the cornhole tournament. Next, 8-11 p.m. is the "rooty music" of Dragon Wagon, with a mix of bluegrass, rock and folk. Steinmetz said the Elks National Foundation issues grants to qualifying lodges to meet community needs. Steinmetz said the Elks have partnered with organizations such as Winterfest and Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festival and are looking for grant opportunities for both events this year. After a year off, a longtime Santa Maria Elks Rodeo tradition - the queen contest - rides back into town for 2009, when a first-time event from 2008 also will return. The 66th annual rodeo begins Friday, June 5, and ends Sunday, June 7, at the Santa Maria Elks/Unocal Event Center, east of Highway 101 at Santa Maria Way.

"RAHWAY-The Rahway Elks Lodge #1075 is sponsoring a murder mystery dinner theater event on Saturday, March 6. This event will take place at the Lodge Hall, which is located at 122 West Milton Avenue in Rahway. The plot has been set: "Murder in Paradise" transforms those in attendance into cruise ship passengers, anchored off the little island of "Nogo Pogo". But all is not well in paradise, as the island music is interrupted by murder! It will be up to the clever passengers to help solve the murder and make it back to the ship."

Event chairman Jim Pettengill explains: "This event is a chance for everyone to shake off the mid-winter blahs and get out of the house for a great evening. It was a windy but sunny day at Mozingo Lake for the 2009 Elks Kids Fishing Tournament. Thirty boys and girls signed up for the event and were split into four age groups. Winners in the age 3-6 group were, first, Gabe Evelore; second, Lanae Eggers; third, Dylon Wilmes; age 7-9 group: Colton Wilmes, Caitlyn Burke and Morgan Goodridge, age 10-12 group: Elijah Greene, Emily Degase and Terrence Eckstein; age 13-14 group: Jace Stroburg and Michelle Verbick. The largest fish was a 6.55 pound catfish caught by Gabe Everlore. Bill Foster, event chairman, gave out the awards of tackle boxes and fishing rods and reels. Other Elks members helped with registration, fish weighing and cooking hot dogs for all attending.

BENNINGTON - The Bennington Elks Club will honor the town's resident senior track master, Bob Matteson, with a special ceremony at its Washington Avenue lodge on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The event will begin with a Flag Day ceremony, after which Matteson will be honored and presented with a resolution adopted by the Vermont State Legislature that "congratulates (Matteson) on his extraordinary accomplishments as a masters runner." Vermont governor James Douglas is scheduled to speak at the ceremony, as is Speaker of the House and longtime Matteson family friend Shap Smith.

Nice event

There is no doubt this lodge was improperly closed and the sponsor and DD exceeded their authority. If a Lodge officer did something like this he'd be expelled. Shouldn't the same happen to others..regardless of their stature in the organization? Hopefully, this lodge will weather the grievous injury inflicted upon it. Renters will not cancel, others will move to support the lodge and members will step up to help. Let's hope so anyway.

Good thing for a lodge to do. Trouble is that it comes so soon after the changing of the leadership, it is hard for the new ER to manage and do everything else. consequently, you need some PER's with some time to orchestrate this event. With so many PER retread's, most lodges (ours included) just don't have the manpower.
