Glenn Greenwald On "America's Lawless Elite" | On Point with Tom Ashbrook - 1 views

  •
Glenn Greenwald studied law and spent ten years as a litigator in federal and state courts across the country. Now he's a big two-fisted progressive blogger and columnist for Salon.com. And he's out with a blistering critique of what has happened to American law. We've stopped applying it to everyone, says Greenwald. We've carved out an exemption for Americans in the halls of power. We've created what Greenwald calls a "lawless elite" that is running roughshod over our economy and national policy. Over American law. This hour On Point: Glenn Greenwald, and liberty and justice for some.

Gonzo Republic: Hunter S Thompson's America by William Stephenson (book review) - 0 views

  •
The first academic book on Thompson in twenty years, designed for both students and scholars. A critical study of the writing of Hunter S Thompson. It doesn't skirt over the controversies involving his life as these give his writing context but it does keep to its intended purpose of focusing on his work.

  •
Escaping the ghetto 11-year-old Hugo is left by his mother in the local brothel, where Mariana, one of the prostitutes, has agreed to hide him. Mariana is a bitterly unhappy woman who hates what she has done to her life, and night after night Hugo sits in her closet and listens uncomprehendingly as she rages at the Nazi soldiers who come and go. This is the Quickest Way Down by Charles Christian (book review) - 0 views

  •
Set primarily in the present day, or very near future, these stories give everyday existence a gentle nudge into the realms of the fantastic, the weird, the erotic, the supernatural, the horrific, the arcane and the surreal. These are stories where a casual sexual encounter can embroil a person in dangerous liaisons with ghosts, aliens or even vengeful gods. Yet also where the bizarre can be found lurking just around the corner, across a cup of cooling mocha in a suburban coffee shop, over a glass of chilled rose wine in beachside cafe on the Cote d'Azur or in the next message to arrive on your mobile phone. These stories tread the fine line between the normal and the fantastic, where the unknown lies behind every unopened door and every unread email.

Ugly to Start With by John Michael Cummings (book review) - 0 views

  •
In some respects this is just another book about growing up. We all have to do it and none of find it easy. Growing up in a small town in America is bad enough but growing up in one of the most beautiful spots in America probably accentuates how ugly the rest of life can get. In these interlinked short stories we get to see one boy's struggles as he tries to understand the world about him and why he isn't always attracted to the beautiful things in his life.

Redeem Love - 0 views

  •
Another marriage is under attack. Will this one survive? As time goes by Brian and Betty drift further apart, wrongly assuming their Christian values will keep them safe. Based on a true story, the dialogs from this feature film screenplay are a breeze to read as an ebook. The role of the children is not ignored - sometimes adding their own selfishness to the drama - sometimes having to step in and behave like grown-ups. Deliverance comes and people's mindsets change for the better.

The Surprising Technology Used By Famous Authors - Edudemic - 0 views

  •
"When I was in college, I may have voiced some annoyance at writing a particularly long assignment (likely my thesis, but I can't remember for certain). My advisor literally laughed in my face, turned around and grabbed a thick volume from the bookshelf behind her desk, and plopped it down with a loud thud. "I typed this bad boy (her dissertation) on a typewriter. And every time I made a mistake on a page, I had to start over." I'm sure you can imagine that I shut my mouth after that. "

‪Elizabeth Warren - The Two Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Mothers and Fathers... - 0 views

  •
Elizabeth Warren discusses how the dreams of the middle class american family are being depleted by the dramatic increase in bankruptcies and foreclosures. Warren discusses the role that credit card companies and ballooning interests rates have played in rapidly increasing mortgage rates as well as the how the over consumption myth is clouding our understanding of the average middle class family, who is in fact experiencing a lower standard of living than their parents and still finding themselves one payment away from losing their home. Elizabeth Warren is the Leo Gottlieb Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and chaired the Congressional Oversight Panel created to investigate the U.S. banking bailout . This program originally aired in April 2004. it is being re-aired because Professor Warren's predictions of economic disasters and the reasons for them have proven correct, and she is a candidate to head a commission to guard against recurrence. The Massachusetts School of Law also presents information on important current affairs to the general public in television and radio broadcasts, an intellectual journal, conferences, author appearances, blogs and books. The Epidemic of Mental Illness: Why? by Marcia Angell | The New York Review of Books - 0 views

  •
It seems that Americans are in the midst of a raging epidemic of mental illness, at least as judged by the increase in the numbers treated for it. The tally of those who are so disabled by mental disorders that they qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) increased nearly two and a half times between 1987 and 2007-from one in 184 Americans to one in seventy-six. For children, the rise is even more startling-a thirty-five-fold increase in the same two decades. Mental illness is now the leading cause of disability in children, well ahead of physical disabilities like cerebral palsy or Down syndrome, for which the federal programs were created.
