Mailing lists are overlooked by the celebrities and musicians. If these artists focused on a mailing list, and not just their social media accounts, they'll have direct access to their audience, without the noise of other status updates. If you see an email from your favorite artist due to an app download, you'll have a really high email open rate. I wrote a post, http://imkingcash.com/blogging-basics-why-getting-the-email-is-so-important/, that hits the nail on the head on why you want to still build your mailing list, even though social media is the most popular thing that everyone and their mother uses.

Imagine if you had a record deal. You have 10 million followers on twitter. You have $2.00 app with your music. You get 1 million downloads. You get the people to sign up using their email addresses. You have 1 million emails. You send emails to your audience telling them about your latest shows and offer a discount to your app downloaders. You still use your social media account but your mailing list gets all types of discounts, etc. Just like every artist, you fall off the map. Your record contract is up and now you want to start an indie label. Being that you have your mailing list of people who downloaded your app, you will still have people buying your music. On your app, you can have them pay $0.99 per track or order the whole physical album at a good price. Hell, whatever you charge you'll make 100% of the profits compared to being under a record deal.

If you're new to blogging, social media is good to use, but getting the email addresses of your audience can outlast the hottest social media platform out now. Remember that even Twitter and Facebook asks for your email address upon signing up.
