BibleGateway.com - Passage Lookup: Acts 2 - 7 views

  • Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
    • dldeskins

Some commentators have said that this wind of the Holy Spirti was not just the gentle breeze. The Holy Spirit was making himself known. It was the sound of "a train going by"... that is, not quiet.
    • Robert Fohr

ἦχος ēchos ay'-khos Of uncertain affinity; a loud or confused noise ("echo"), that is, roar; figuratively a rumor: - fame, sound.
  •  1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
    • dldeskins

The "day of Pentecost" was on a Sunday. That is, 50 days after Passover (a Sabbath).
  • tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them
    • dldeskins

Tongues was not limited here, as the "gift of tongues" would be (see 1Co 12). Here everyone that believed received the Holy Spirit, and as a sign, spoke in other tongues. Paul talks about speaking in the "tongues of men and of angels" but clearly here, those that spoke in tongues ware clearly a sign to, and understood by, the non-believing Jews that were present.
  • ...13 more annotations...
  • 8Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 1 >0Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"
    • dldeskins

      All the known world
  • 7Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans?
    • dldeskins

Galileans - The meaning here is that these were not "educated" people like the Romans or Greeks.
  • 13Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine.[b]"
    • dldeskins

Not sure about this. Why would the non-believing crowd think that they were drunk? Yes, they were probably in the middle of a feast and wine was available, but it was only 9am. What about their actions made the non-believing crowd think that they were drunk.
    • anonymous

It may have been because they heard so many languages all at once and each only understood his own native toungue. So the sound in general may have been like babeling (although the foreigners clearly understood the message in their own language).
  • 5Now
    • dldeskins

The Jews in Jerusalem were not there to party. They were devout people (men?)
    • anonymous

It seems from verse 2 that this event was not at the temple but at a house so there may well have been women and children in the crowd as well as men. Most likly- in that culture and the crowd being "devout" - the women & children would be quiet and respectful in public.
  • 6When they heard this sound
    • dldeskins

Again, this was a loud sound... a comotion. The Holy Spirit had made His presence known.
    • anonymous

As throughout the accounts given to us in scripture - here again, the Lord honored and confirmed His Word using these supernatural events at the initialization of His church -the body of Christ!
  • Then Peter stood up with the Eleven
    • dldeskins

Peter had once rejected Jesus, but he was now leading the way.
  • seemed
    • Robert Fohr

      KJV reads.... appeared.
    • Robert Fohr

In the greek we have the word....ὀπτάνομαι, ὄπτομαι optanomai optomai op-tan'-om-ahee, op'-tom-ahee....which means.... The first a (middle voice) prolonged form of the second (primary) which is used for it in certain tenses; and both as alternates of G3708; to gaze (that is, with wide open eyes, as at something remarkable; and thus differing from G991, which denotes simply voluntary observation; and from G1492, which expresses merely mechanical, passive or casual vision; while G2300, and still more emphatically its intensive G2334, signifies an earnest but more continued inspection; and G4648 a watching from a distance): - appear, look, see, shew self.
  • to be
    • Robert Fohr

In the King James version this reads...unto them,...the greek word - αὐτός autos ow-tos'...is used here, meaning.... From the particle αὖ au (perhaps akin to the base of G109 through the idea of a baffling wind; backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the compound of G1438) of the third person, and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons: - her, it (-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, ([self-], the) same, ([him-, my-, thy-]) self, [your-] selves, she, that, their (-s), them ([-selves]), there [-at, -by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with], they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.
  • tongues
    • Robert Fohr

Greek New Testament reads...γλῶσσα glōssa gloce'-sah Of uncertain affinity; the tongue; by implication a language (specifically one naturally unacquired): - tongue.
  • They saw what seemed to be
    • Robert Fohr

KJV....And there appeared unto them.... In the greek the word... ὀπτάνομαι, ὄπτομαι optanomai optomai op-tan'-om-ahee, op'-tom-ahee is used....meaning....
  • Suddenly
    • Robert Fohr

Greek New Testament (GNT) aphnō af'-no Adverb from G852 (contracted); unawares, that is, unexpectedly: - suddenly.
  • a sound
    • Robert Fohr

  • filled
    • Robert Fohr

Geek... πληρόω plēroō play-ro'-o From G4134; to make replete, that is, (literally) to cram (a net), level up (a hollow), or (figuratively) to furnish (or imbue, diffuse, influence), satisfy, execute (an office), finish (a period or task), verify (or coincide with a prediction), etc.: - accomplish, X after, (be) complete, end, expire, fill (up), fulfil, (be, make) full (come), fully preach, perfect, supply.

SALMOS - LII - QUANDO CAI A FICHA - 0 views

  •

The last time that it is recorded in the Bible that anyone "cast lots." Used to determine the will of God. Of course we now have the Holy Spirit to guide us.

I enjoy learning a lot about the bible and studying God's Word, as much as I am not a big fan of reading. Most recently my Bible Study Group disbanded because the leaders of the group moved out of state. It is great that various people of differing backgrounds and levels of faith can come together to learn and grow. Fellowship is increased and so is the learning. These groups are so important to the ministry of the church. faith bible #HPISummer17

Remember that time Jesus told the story about the farmer ( Matthew 13 )? A farmer went out and threw seeds onto different types of soil. Some of the seeds were choked by thorns, others were eaten by birds and a few of the seeds grew and produced loads of fruit.
