Personal Learning Environments (PLE) are systems that help learners take control of and manage their own learning.[1] This includes providing support for learners to:

set their own learning goals
manage their learning, both content and process
communicate with others in the process of learning

The challenges facing a new teacher are clear: how to write a strong lesson plan, how to master the fine art of lesson delivery and how to keep kids engaged in a positive classroom environment are all high on the list. Add to that list the addition of mastering the use of technology tools to support instruction with students, and many a new teacher might go running for the hills!

The importance of early literacy cannot be understated. Countless studies have shown that students who start reading earlier are better prepared for the academic road ahead. Not to mention, early readers are much more likely to become lifelong readers.....

Muita da discussão em torno dos PLEs se tem desenvolvido a partir da sua comparação com os LMSs (Learning management systems) ou os VLEs (Virtual Learning Environments) usados por instituições educativas e empresas para desenvolver o ensino e a aprendizagem. Não obstante existirem algumas perspectivas que postulam, pura e simplesmente, a não existência dos LMSs/VLEs, a maior parte dos autores procura encontrar formas de articulação entre estes e os PLEs, embora com graus diferentes de relevância ou integração.
