FARNET.lab: Linking fisheries to the tourism economy - 0 views

  •
"FARNET's next transnational seminar for Fisheries Local Action Groups will be dedicated to "Linking fisheries to the tourism economy" and will take place from the 22-24 of October 2013 in Sardinia (Italy). Designed to help the many FLAGs across Europe that would like to foster the potential of fisheries related tourism, this seminar will guide participants through the process of supporting tourist product development, from involving the fisheries sector, to placing products on the market. The seminar will offer a mix of activities, including the presentation of good practices, exchanges in small groups, and a field visit which will capitalise on Italy's experience of pesca-tourism and "itti-tourism". FLAG board members from the fisheries sector are especially encouraged to attend."

"A report commissioned by the European Parliament on women in fisheries has recently been published. Entitled "Women in fisheries: a European perspective", the report gives an overview of the current situation faced by women in the fisheries and aquaculture sector in Europe and the prerequisites for improved gender mainstreaming. It presents and discusses the available data on female employment in the sector, the problems faced by women's fisheries organisations and their future prospects. It also proposes that the impact of the EFF on the promotion of gender equality should be evaluated, and outlines the expectations vested in the EMFF. "

FARNET Guide #8: Marketing the local catch - 0 views

  •
"In 2013, the FARNET seminar, "Marketing the Local Catch", brought together stakeholders from across Europe to exchange ideas and experience on the marketing of locally caught fish and seafood. This guide presents some of the options and tools fishermen and other local stakeholders can avail of to improve the marketing of the local catch, with the help of their Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG). It starts by looking at some of the reasons for, and benefits of, improving the marketing of local fisheries products. It then looks more specifically at the role of FLAGs, and how they can assist in the development of marketing projects. Finally, two innovative ways to improve marketing locally (direct sales, Community Supported Fisheries) are presented, as well as three practical tools that can be used to improve the effectiveness of the marketing strategy: digital tools, experience-based activities and labels and brands."

Research into the sustainability of the small-scale coastal fishery of the Gulf of Finland - 0 views

  •
ESKO FLAG covers the coastal region of the Gulf of Finland. This is an area with a long tradition of professional small-scale coastal fishing, though the number of registered full-time fishermen has been steadily declining over the past 25 years and it is increasingly difficult to get new and younger people to continue this traditional activity. In recent years, questions have been raised about the sustainability of fishing activities in this area. Notably, WWF Finland publishes a yearly consumer guide, which classifies the main types of fish caught in this area, especially salmon and whitefish, as endangered, threatened or protected species, and recommends consumers not to buy them. To compound the problem, there are also some conflicts between fishing professionals, recreational fishing and fishing tourism concerning the exploitation of fish stocks in the area.

"Axis 4 Managing Authorities met in Brussels to exchange on key issues involved in finalising their EMFF Operational Programmes for the new period and moving towards implementation. The meeting included an update from DG Mare on the state of play with regards to programming CLLD under the different ESI funds, as well as a presentation on the Atlantic Action Plan and Atlantic Stakeholder platform, offering participants an opportunity to reflect on how their EMFF and CLLD strategies linked up with broader maritime basin strategies. The meeting then moved on to smaller, practical working groups addressing the following themes: FLAG transition and mobilising preparatory support; transferring the EMFF regulation into practice and National/Regional legislation; the steps to plan for when selecting the new round of FLAGs; and setting up national FLAG networks. A further session was dedicated to reflecting on the type of support MAs required in the future in order to be more effective in their programming and implementing of fisheries CLLD."

"Un nouveau rapport de la Banque mondiale : « Fish to 2030 : Prospects for Fisheries and Aquaculture » estime que presque deux tiers des produits de la mer que nous consommons seront issus de l'élevage en 2030. Le rapport conclut qu'alors que les sources de pêche de capture approchent leur maximum, l'aquaculture - ou pisciculture - aidera à satisfaire l'appétit mondial grandissant pour le poisson et les fruits de mer."
