Not too long ago, a reader came to us with the idea that we should write a bacon book. You know, a book about bacon. We tossed around a few ideas that all centered around bacon and books and how to combine them into a book about bacon but we haven’t nailed down a bacon book concept just yet. Today we received an email from Boss Hog over at BaconFreak.com announcing that he’s released the first edition of his Bacon Cookbook. What better book about bacon could there be than a bacon book that helps you cook the meat candy? According to the web site (with the oh-so-catchy URL of BaconCookbook.com) they’ve got recipes from some renowned chefs that will help you get your bacon fix for breakfast, lunch, dinner, appetizers, and even bacon desserts. We got a chance to peek at the bacon cookbook ahead of time and were impressed with the quality of the bacon recipes included in the book. Don’t be surprised if you see a couple examples of bacon dishes we test out here at Bacon Today. We’re planning to cook up a few of the meals to give them the official Bacon Today taste test. Bacon Pancakes The folks over at This is Freaking Ridiculous posted this picture which will undoubtedly cause bacon lovers around the world to collectively smack their foreheads and say “why didn’t I think of that?” So bust out the pancake batter and fry up some bacon and have yourself a hearty breakfast (or you could just buy pancake mix infused with bacon, but hey to each their own).

Bacon. Coffee. Beer.  Why not put these wonderful things together? As an avid homebrewer that likes to tinker with extreme style beers, that’s the question I found myself asking. Make the base beer an oatmeal stout, add some high quality coffee and infuse with bacon—breakfast in a bottle. As I write this I am waiting for the sparge to finish up, so the process of creating the ultimate nerd’s beer is already well underway. Over the course of the next month or so, I plan to document the progress of the beer, culminating in a taste test of the final product. Given the flavor profile I’m going for here, I have to believe that this might actually taste pretty damn good. We’re talking a medium bodied stout with a rich coffee flavor, a hint of chocolate and bacon and the smooth mouthfeel that comes with brewing with oats. Plus you get a kick of caffeine and alcohol. So, I’ll start sometime later this week with details on the brew day, and drop in over the next few weeks to keep you updated on the various steps as they happen. With any luck, this little experiment will churn out one crazy awesome bacon brew.
