Under the hood of the 3i Touring and Grand Touring models is the new 2.0-liter four-cylinder Skyactiv-G that pumps out 155 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. These models come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission or an optional 6-speed automatic. Mazda estimates its gas mileage at 28 mpg city and 40 mpg on the highway for an automatic sedan and 27 and 39, respectively, with the manual. Fuel economy for the hatchback is estimated at 28 and 39 with the automatic and 27 and 38 with the manual.

Under the hood of all of these newer Focus models is a 2.0 liter inline four-cylinder engine that pumps out 140 horsepower. Shoppers in California-level emission states can find the cleaner, PZEV-certified version of this engine that produces 130 horsepower. Transmission-wise, all can be found with either the standard 5-speed manual or the optional 4-speed automatic.

Under the hood of the front-wheel-drive 2012 S60 T5 is a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-5 engine that outputs 250 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Volvo says that in performance tests, the T5 went from a standstill to 60 mph in a quick 6.8 seconds. Not bad for a car with an EPA gas mileage rating of 20 mpg city and 30 mpg on the highway.

Powering the base and SE Highlander models is a 2.7-liter inline-4 engine that produces 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. These 4-cylinder models come standard with front-wheel drive (FWD), while all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional, and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The EPA-estimated gas mileage for this engine is a very good 20 mpg city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Powering all 2011 Chevy Traverse models is a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 281 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque in the LS and LT models. And due to a dual-outlet exhaust, it delivers 288 horsepower and 270 pound-feet in the LTZ. It's paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control in all models.

With its softly tuned suspension, the 2011 Versa offers the kind of smooth ride more typically associated with larger cars. Both engines provide adequate power and the handling is competent enough to satisfy most drivers ... and all with excellent fuel economy. The best of the group in terms of driving, however, would be the 5-speed manual 1.6 and the 1.8 SL hatchback with the CVT.
