I'm going to do a little role play. I (Mark) will be going to a street food stall. I am male, and let's say the food vendor is female.
You might already know this, but just to clarify:
The first thing to know about Thai language are the two polite words, krub and kha, that are used at the end of nearly every sentence to soften the speech and be more polite. If you are male, you use krub, and if you are female you use kha. It's NOT about who you are talking to, it's about you, if you are male or female.
(If you are female and in the position of Mark in this role play, when you see krub switch to kha)
Entering a food stall...
Mark: "Sawasdee krub (สวัสดีครับ)" - hello
Vendor: "Sawasdee kha (สวัสดีค่ะ)" - hello
Proceed to just sit down at any empty table
Mark: "Mee arai bang krub? (มีอะไรบ้างครับ)" - what do you have?
Vendor: "Me ahan dtam song kha (มีอาหารตามสั่งค่ะ)" - we have stir fried dishes
Mark:
"Ben gap khao krub (เป็นกับข้าวครับ)" - this is to order each dish in separate plates, as opposed to ordering rad khao (ราดข้าว) - rice and then a dish over the top of a plate of rice. You usually get bigger portions when ordering gap khao (กับข้าว)
"kaw pad ka prao gai phet mak (ขอผัดกะเพราไก่เผ็ดมาก)" - I would like basil chicken, very spicy
"tom yum goong nam sai (ต้มยำกุ้งน้ำใส)" - tom yum with shrimp, clear version
"kai jeow moo saab (ไข่เจียวหมูสับ)" - minced pork omelet
"laoko khao plao song janh dooay krub" (แล้วก็ข้าวเปล่า 2 จานด้วยครับ)" - and also two plates of plain rice please
Vendor: "Kha (ค่ะ)" - polite acknowledgement
Mark: "Kaw nam kaeng song kaew krub (ขอน้ำแข็ง 2 แก้วครับ)" - 2 cups of ice please
Vendor: "Kha (ค่ะ)" - polite acknowledgement
When the food comes, eat everything, and smile!
Mark: "Kep dtang krub (เก็บตังค์ครับ)" - can I have the bill?
Vendor: "Kha (ค่ะ)" - polite acknowledgement
Mark: "Aroi mak krub, kop khun krub (อร่อยมากครับ)!" - It was very delicious, thank you very much
Vendor: "Kop khun kha (ขอบคุณค่ะ)!" - Thank you very much
That's it, meal accomplished!
Here are some extra useful phrases:
Do you have a menu? - mee menoo mai krub / kha? (มีเมนูมั๊ยครับ)
How much is it?- annee tao rai krub / kha? (อันนี้เท่าไหร่ครับ)
Not spicy please - mai phet krub / kha (ไม่เผ็ดครับ / ค่ะ)
