Seven free resources for teaching about the election Teachers, students can benefit from these interactive tools The 2012 presidential election is drawing near, and educators across the country are using campaign efforts as a chance to teach students about the democratic process, the major issues in the race, and how these issues might affect students now and in the future.

Geography frequently takes a back seat to history in the social studies classroom, but teaching geographic literacy is essential if students are going to understanding the challenges and opportunities of our complex world. We have created 10 activities for teaching about geography using Times content, all related to the National Geography Standards, which were produced by the Geography Education National Implementation Project. Our list is a grab-bag of ideas - from designing maps to analyzing border conflicts - and teachers can use the activities in any order, or as a road map for tracking ongoing coverage of geography-related issues.

I read an article about a month ago on when watching a video or movie in class, teachers were using a chat room to simultaneously discuss the movie. Tiny Chat is only one of many sites where you can create temporary chat rooms for the class and share the link to all of your students. At the end, many of these chat rooms disappear and the info gets cleared. What I liked about Tiny chat is that is also has the ability to show webcams, share Youtube videos, and you can create a whiteboard to share with the group so they can do some brainstorming.

Futurist website nowandnext.com put together this awesome infographic predicting all of the technologies, behaviors, and ideas that will probably be distant memories by 2050. Among their predictions: no more retirement four years from now, no more secretaries six years from now, and no more free parking or sit-down breakfasts by 2019. The National Geographic maps can be found in their own section of Google Maps Gallery, which launched officially on February 27. This includes reference maps, wall maps, National Geographic magazine supplement maps, and other creations from over the years, all laid on top of the relevant Google basemaps.
