  • The United States army says it has launched a major offensive against the Taliban in the southern Afghan province of Helmand.
  • The US military says about 4,000 marines as well as 650 Afghan troops are involved, supported by Nato planes.

  • The operation would have an initial highly aggressive stage lasting 36 hours, AFP news agency reported. It aims to improve security ahead of presidential elections on 20 August 20, allowing voter registration where before there was none, Gen Nicholson said.
  • As of June 2009, Nato's International Security Assistance Force had 61,130 personnel from 42 countries including the US, European countries, Australia, Jordan and New Zealand. The US is the largest contributor, providing 28,850 soldiers.
  • It also has troops under Operation Enduring Freedom - mostly in the east of Afghanistan on the border with Pakistan - that are not under Isaf's command. In December 2008 they numbered 17,100. President Obama has pledged to send an additional 21,000 extra soldiers to Afghanistan, many of them redeployed from operations in Iraq, to help with training Afghan security forces and to tackle the insurgency.

  • At least 27 civilians died in a Nato air strike in southern Afghanistan, the Afghan cabinet says, revising downwards a prior statement that 33 were killed.
  • Nato said it hit a suspected insurgent convoy, but ground forces later found "a number of individuals killed and wounded", including women and children. Sunday's attack, in Uruzgan province, was not part of a major Nato-led push in neighbouring Helmand province.
  • Last year, Gen Stanley McChrystal, the Nato and US commander in Afghanistan, introduced much tougher rules of engagement in a bid to minimise such casualties.

  • A man described as the top Afghan Taliban military commander and named as Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar has been captured in Pakistan, US officials say.He was seized in a US-Pakistani raid seven to nine days ago, a Pakistani military official told the BBC. The government has yet to confirm the arrest; the Taliban have denied it.

  • Two Nato rockets aimed at Taliban insurgents in Helmand missed their target today, killing 12 civilians sheltering in their home and dealing a sharp blow to hopes that civilian casualties would be avoided in the largest western-led operation of the nine-year Afghan war.
  • The incident occurred in Nad Ali, an insurgent-infested area where British troops are operating. A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said the rockets, which were fired by a sophisticated missile system, were a "US responsibility".

  • Personal details about the life of the next head of MI6, Sir John Sawers, have been removed from social networking site Facebook amid security concerns. The Mail on Sunday said his wife put details about their children and the location of their flat on the site. The details were removed after the paper contacted the Foreign Office.

He was in that post from 1999 to 2001 and was involved in the Kosovo conflict and Northern Ireland peace process.
