Vice videos can have some foul language. I use this when teaching Air and Water Pollution. This video is somewhat benign in the language department. Video also can be used to discuss developing countries and recycling of minerals.

Video: Clearing California Skies - 2 views

  •
Clearing California Skies California, 1943. The mysterious haze called smog was getting worse - burning eyes, searing throats, literally choking the life out of Californians. The video, Clearing California Skies tells the story of how concerned citizens, top scientists, and local and state government agencies fought back. It took the best science and engineering to control smog forming emissions from factories, shops, incinerators, and the automobile. Despite meteoric population gains, (more factories, more cars, more trucks) - air quality has improved dramatically over the past 50 years, and along the way California emerged as a world leader in the battle against air pollution.

At this point, this is a classic example of trophic cascades. Sort of the "peppered moth" of the subject. This is a nice video about it. (I now see that the video has been shared already, but this also has an article (which includes the correction of deer/elk)

Class discussion will follows on what will happen in the future to this site as well as to the plants and animals that live and feed in Chernobyl.

Web Extra: At the Core of Climate Change - 1 views

  •
How do we know that the climate is changing? In this video, provided by scientist Kendrick Taylor, learn how 8-foot long ice core samples extracted from deep in the ice layer of Antarctica hold key evidence of rapidly changing climactic conditions. Its about 20 minutes, but explains the process from ice core extraction, analysis and data collection that make up our current climate models. Best for 11 and 12, but also good for 9 and 10 advanced students. Needs to be modified for ESL and RSP students, due to the amount of chemistry and physics vocabulary.

The Reality of Plastic - YouTube - 3 views

  •
lastic. It's super useful but it's also a big problem for the environment. Enough plastic is thrown away every year to circle the earth four times! The main issue is that plastic doesn't biodegrade, meaning it sticks around for a very long time. This video gives a quick overview of the scope of the plastic problem and what some people are doing to try to solve it. .
