It makes sense because she is the only person in the play who is looking for something, though she never knows what it is. She is always hallucinating or having mood swings due to her addiction to morphine. Mary is the main subject the story revolves around ending each of the acts with her and her hallucinations. The critic argues that Mary is indeed the protagonist and gives reasonable evidence, though later states that she does not do enough to really be the protagonist and therefore no one is the protagonist because no character really drives the play and there is no major plot just repetitive actions. I think that Mary really is the protagonist because without her the family would not have all the issues that it does and there would be even less of a plot.
