Hyeonseo Lee: My escape from North Korea | Video on TED.com - 0 views

  • As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee thought her country was “the best on the planet.” It wasn't until the famine of the 90s that she began to wonder. She escaped the country at 14, to begin a life in hiding, as a refugee in China. Hers is a harrowing, personal tale of survival and hope -- and a powerful reminder of those who face constant danger, even when the border is far behind.
  •
This is another powerful resource from TED that helps students of geography understand how and why some governments in the world, such as North Korea, are more authoritative than others. Why did Hyeonsea escape North Korea? How was she able to get her family out of North Korea?

North, South Korea meet for talks after tensions - CNN.com - 0 views

  •
The high-level talks included from the North, Kim Jong Un's deputy, Hwang Pyong So, a member of Kim Jong Un's inner circle and political director of his country's army; and Kim Yang Gon, a veteran of negotiations with South Korea since Kim's father, Kim Jong Il, ruled the secretive regime.
  •
Disregard that last comment... It automatically added it by itself. As tensions between the two countries of North and South Korea increase due to the severe injury inflicted on two South Korean soldiers from a North Korean landmine, shots were fired on both sides of the peninsula and are now discussing plans for the future of both countries. South Korea, despite many threats and warning from the North are blasting world news, S.Korean music and propaganda with powerful speakers in the DMZ zone. For many, this may be a big deal but South Koreans continue their daily lives as if nothing happened like many times before. In this article, we can see the theme of globalization. North Korea is the most isolated country in the world that does not allow any form of media, news or objects from any other countries. South Korea broke this 'sacred' rule when they blasted music, news and propaganda to the North with speakers spreading different ideas and religious beliefs into an area that did not have them before.

I will always be amused by North Korea's attempt to be more powerful than it's neighbors. Great post.

North Korea and South Korea are talking. After an exchange of gunfire between the two countries they are finally meeting in Tokyo after more than a year to discuss with each other as well as to try and end the military standoff which has brought fear and death so that it won't lead into a full scale military dispute between the two countries. You can view this as the theme of globalization because of South Korea's propaganda broadcast into one of the most isolated countries in the world. Which if not stopped could have brought more war into both countries.

North, South Korea talk all night, to resume Sunday, in bid to end standoff - 0 views

  •
This article discusses the issues between North Korea and South Korea. Tensions have risen between the two countries after South Korea started playing propaganda, which was a tactic ended many years earlier. The two countries were engaged in a military standoff. They were in discussions to end their standoff but they talks were halted. This conflict falls into globalization because the two countries aren't smoothing issues out they are creating more problems. These countries aren't creating a market between themselves which is part of globalization. The two countries have always had tensions between them but they have risen in recent days. What should they two countries do to end tensions? Do you think the countries will reach an agreement?

North Korea orders border troops into 'wartime state' - CNN.com - 0 views

In this article, it explains the most recent information about the animosity between North and South Korea. As mentioned in the story, the ongoing conflict between the two countries has once again been brought to attention in the beginning of August when South Korean men were injured by North Korean landmines. More recently, South Korea had detected a rocket being launched toward their country. They then responded by firing some shells back toward the area from where the rocket had been launched. This particular event reminds me of the theme of region in geography. This is because the two cultures have always had a long history where they were fighting each other, as was the case in the Korean War. Region itself, is a geographical area based on how a culture functions. Therefore, it is not too much of a surprise that they are once again fighting because it is their natural tendency to fight. I am sure that this is just the beginning of this current conflict and that there will be more trouble for these countries in the future.

Although most people see this as a big joke of a comedy, it may develop into a very serious issue. The movie is racist toward the North Koreans, and mocks their culture.
  •
I agree that the movie mocks their culture, but due to the high firewall of North Korea, I do not see the uprising among their people, but rather their government. The government is drawing more attention to the issue.
  •
I agree with Peyton. Do you think that the general public is aware of the movie and the controversy that it is bringing? If so, to what extent?

Diffusion of Social Media - Frank Ruszkowski - 9 views

Go to this website to see how, when, and where social media has diffused through the years and where it is prevented from spreading. This is mainly about Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

The site is aesthetically pleasing with a sufficient amount of information without deterring an individual. The diffusion of social media reminds me of the notes we took on the diffusion patterns of television and the internet.
  •
I like the organization of your website. I never knew Facebook was so dominant throughout the world! The information is very useful about where some types of social media are banned. The spread of social media is similar to what we learned in class.
  •
Your website was organized very nicely and I learned info I had never known before about how Facebook and social media affects parts of the world.
  •
This website was great to learn about how social media has spread across the world. I learned a lot about how the government in some countries blocks the use of social media.
  •
This website was great since I got to learn about the diffusion of social media, which plays a big part in our lives. It was nicely organized, and provided a lot of interesting information.
  •
It was interesting to see which countries ban types of social media and how that reflects their type of government. I was surprised to see North Korea does not ban Youtube but India does.
  •
Nice job on showing the diffusion of social media, using three strong examples.
  •
Great job on the website. It was something different as most people did cooking, music, or sports. I remember in the book that it said that YouTube hadn't diffused much in 2011. It's amazing what a difference three years can make.
