    APHUG,
We have confirmed many times this year that knowledge of current events drastically helps us develop deeper understandings of human geography and overall global awareness. For this assignment, you will be locating a current event online (nothing older than 3 months old) relevant to our geographical examination into either the industrial sector, service sector, or both. Download the Diigolet tool for this task. Complete the tasks below:
Once you ***bookmark your article, open the Diigolet tool and:
    1. Use your yellow highlighter to find a sentence or two that summarizes the essence of the text.
    2. Use your blue highlight to document the aspects of the article that relates to either the industrial sector, service sector, or both.
    3. Compose at least 5 notes in the article using at least 5 post-it notes; including …
    a. at least 1 general observations, remarks, or anything that surprised you in the article
    b. at least 1 reference and explanation to one of the five themes of geography
    c. at least 1 reference and explanation to either the industrial sector, service sector, or both that is connected in the article
    d. at least 1 question regarding the article
    e. at least 1 reference and link to another current event you found that relates to the article
    4. Create at least 2 comments on Diigo directed towards two different people from either period 1 or 7 APHUG after you read their article and notes. Your comments should extend the learning of the responses found in their article. You can create an observation, question, or offer another connection from our APHUG understandings. Perhaps you can provide another specific reference to CH. 11 or 12. Think about all the learning taking place!
Remember: Your post must be submitted in our APHumanGeography Diigo group. Please "Tag" your current as either "Industry" or "Services" and uncheck the private status of your post.
Current Event #9 for CH. 11 or 12 (Industry or Services) on Diigo by 11:59 PM, Wed. 4/9, comments on Diigo by 11:59 PM, Thurs. 4/10 ….. See me in advance if you need help!

$50M PetSmart distribution center set to open in Berks County | Lehigh Valley Business - 4 views

I have driven past this area many times on trips to see my family in NJ.

How many other distribution centers does PetSmart own in PA, the US, and around the world?
    • Mr. Reidy

What are the situation and site factors that make this place a good investment for PetSmart?

According to Wikipedia, "A distribution center for a set of products is a warehouse or other specialized building, often with refrigeration or air conditioning, which is stocked with products (goods) to be redistributed to retailers, to wholesalers, or directly to consumers."
    • Mr. Reidy

Evidently, distribution centers are crucial in the retail service industry.  The existence of these buildings in our cultural landscape (one of our geography themes) suggests that our society is partly driven by consumerism. I believe that the US would be considered a stage 5 country according Rostow's economic development theory due to our nation's ability to produce and consume material goods.  These distribution centers also suggest that our globalized society (another theme!) values time and money; many business owners and consumers want their products in an instant.

For further information about the importance of distribution centers in the service industry, see this Forbes article about Walmart "fighting" to be successful in China ... http://www.forbes.com/sites/walterloeb/2013/11/06/how-walmart-will-fight-to-be-successful-in-china/  Any connections?
