Today over 65 million American adults are affected by high blood pressure or hypertension as it is medically referred to. This is an increase of 30% over the previous decade. This disease is often termed the "silent killer" because many people that are affected by it are unaware.

Because many people are not aware that they even have this condition it is termed the "silent killer". While we know that some diseases such as diabetes are linked to high blood pressure the truth is that in 90-95% of all cases the exact cause is unknown.

But it plays a contributing role in more than 15% of deaths in the United States, according to a new Harvard study.

Blood pressure is the pressure exerted against the walls of our arteries. This definition is according to the National Heart Association (AHA). It affects tens of millions of people in this country and about a third of them are not aware that they have this condition.
