  •
Veterinarians attending the annual convention of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) this month in Chicago are reminded that the 80th meeting (also in Chicago) was the site of one of the most important advances in small animal practice. Beginning at that August 1933 meeting and concluding later in October, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) was formed.

Veterinarians in Combat During World War II - 0 views

  •
The Soviet Union and other eastern European forces continued to occasionally use mounted cavalry and supply horses during World War II, with great loss of equestrian life from trauma, disease and starvation. Though the United States maintained a cavalry up until the beginning of the European theatre of WW II (1939), there were relatively few places where the U.S. deployed horses or mules in combat areas.

Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories in the United States - 0 views

  •
Several years ago, Dr. Douglas Aspros, who is now the president of the AVMA, wrote that, "When we support a vigorous and proactive public-health community, we all share the dividends. There are few areas of government spending where the return on our investment is so immediate, highly leveraged, and well-established. If we, as public health stewards, are doing our jobs right, we implement programs and save people's lives before they know them to be in jeopardy.

The Power and Impact of the Story - 0 views

  •
This story marks the 40th VeritasDVMblog entry since our first posting in April. Approximately one-third of the way through our writing for this 150th AVMA anniversary year, I pause to thank my colleagues, staff and my close friends, for their support and diligence, to my contributing authors and co-authors for adding depth and perspective, and to the supporters at Zoetis for their confidence in this body of work and their commitment to enhancing veterinary education.

Letters of Recommendation for Application to Veterinary College - 0 views

  •
It is the season in which hopeful future veterinarians are completing their VMCAS applications for next fall's matriculation into the Class of 20181. Besides the personal statement (essay) and summaries of academic and work experiences, the most important aspect of the application is letters of evaluation from mentors, work supervisors, and current and former teachers.

Diary of a Columbia Veterinary College Student 1882-1884 - 0 views

  •
First person oral histories of veterinarians who graduated many years ago provide wonderful insights into life and times in a former period of our history. However, the recounting of experiences from decades earlier may be tempered as the passage of time yields the possibility that past experiences may be replayed in the context of a more contemporary society. In addition, memories fade and events that are retold may not always represent the most compelling stories of daily life as it actually was.

Vivien Thomas and the Role of Dogs in Experimental Surgery - 0 views

  •
Through the first half of the 20th century, dogs were used extensively by physicians in medical schools to help them understand the physiologic and pathologic changes associated with disease in people. Many complex surgical procedures were tested by MDs first on dogs before they were performed on people. Surgical residents developed their technical skills in "dog labs" that were common in medical schools.
