Make a mummy!

It was startling. More than 5,000 years ago, after burying their dead, the ancient Egyptians learned that the burning desert sands desiccated corpses. Instead of turning to dust, the skin shriveled up and clung to the bones. Mummification-the practice of dressing for success, eternal success-had begun.

To learn about the mummification process, student teams will mummify a fish and create the necessary artifacts (cartouche and mask) to be placed in a designated burial site.

Canopic jars were an important part of the mummification process. The body's internal organs were carefully stored in these jars. There were always four jars, representing the four sons of the god Horus - four protective spirits - human, baboon, falcon, and jackal.

Welcome to Life in Ancient Egypt, an introduction to The Walton Hall of Ancient Egypt at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Carnegie Museum of Natural History has acquired Egyptian artifacts since its founding and now holds about twenty-five-hundred ancient Egyptian artifacts. The most significant of these objects, over six hundred of them, are displayed in The Walton Hall of Ancient Egypt. In the hall the artifacts are displayed in relation to the daily life and traditions of the people who made them, so that the objects are seen in the context of the culture. To present a cohesive picture of ancient Egyptian society, its technology, its social system, and its beliefs, we have arranged the objects in several thematic areas. Life in Ancient Egypt, however, presents the themes in a slightly different order than the hall.
