Glacier National Park: Fire and Rain - 1 views

  •
At one point the fire got so big that they parked a train - loaded with foam - just outside of town. This was to be our protection in case the wind changed direction. Later on we made the hike to spend the night at the historic Sperry Chalet.

"Yuppie 911" strains backcountry rescuers - 0 views

  •
Beyond the growing number of questionable incidences, the article was prompted by the story of a group of hikers in the Grand Canyon that activated their emergency beacon three times over the course of three days! Each time a helicopter was mobilized for a potential rescue. On the third mobilization, rescuers finally took the four hikers off the trail and cited the leader for "creating a hazardous condition" for the rescue teams.

An interesting study was published this month showing that bears in Yosemite break into minivans more often than any other vehicle. The analysis discusses several competing hypotheses about why bears selected minivans during the study.

Hike to Mt. Rogers in Virginia - 0 views

  •
Nearly the entire length of the four-mile (one-way) hike to the summit of Mt. Rogers passes through open country, offering sweeping views of the surrounding wilderness as far as the eye can see. With the rocky outcroppings and the open views, it seems more like hiking in some places out west rather than in the Appalachian Mountains.

Hiking the Grand Canyon: Rim to Rim - 0 views

  •
For many hikers, a "bucket list" or "life list" just wouldn't be complete unless it included a rim to rim hike across the Grand Canyon. I was fortunate enough to do just that over the Memorial Day weekend in 1996 with three fellow hikers.

Grizzly Encounter on Yellowstone's Avalanche Peak - 0 views

  •
One of our prime hiking destinations for the week was a climb up 10,566-foot Avalanche Peak, located about eight miles from the park's east entrance. We put this hike at the top of our itinerary because it's one of the higher peaks in Yellowstone, and it didn't require any technical skills to reach the summit.
