One of our prime hiking destinations for the week was a climb up 10,566-foot Avalanche Peak, located about eight miles from the park's east entrance. We put this hike at the top of our itinerary because it's one of the higher peaks in Yellowstone, and it didn't require any technical skills to reach the summit.

For many hikers, a "bucket list" or "life list" just wouldn't be complete unless it included a rim to rim hike across the Grand Canyon. I was fortunate enough to do just that over the Memorial Day weekend in 1996 with three fellow hikers.

Nearly the entire length of the four-mile (one-way) hike to the summit of Mt. Rogers passes through open country, offering sweeping views of the surrounding wilderness as far as the eye can see. Beyond the growing number of questionable incidences, the article was prompted by the story of a group of hikers in the Grand Canyon that activated their emergency beacon three times over the course of three days! Each time a helicopter was mobilized for a potential rescue. On the third mobilization, rescuers finally took the four hikers off the trail and cited the leader for "creating a hazardous condition" for the rescue teams.

Each day, on average, there were 11.2 search and rescue (SAR) incidents in our national park system. Most are concentrated in just 5 park units. The most likely people to require a rescue are males, hikers and boaters.

Waterfalls of North Carolina is the very first map available that features and highlights more than 300 waterfalls in the western North Carolina region, including the Great Smoky Mountains.

From the shore you'll have outstanding views of Ypsilon Mountain, including the snow-filled Y-looking couloirs, from which the mountain derives its name.

The trail to Bluebird Lake begins out of the fairly remote Wild Basin area in the southeastern corner of Rocky Mountain National Park. You'll see several waterfalls, wildflowers, as well as the awesome devastation left behind by the 1978 Ouzel Fire before reaching the incredibly beautiful alpine lake situated at more than 11,000 feet.

"Are we out of this godforsaken Boulder Field yet?" The famous trek to the Key Hole on Longs Peak requires a difficult slog through the Boulder Field, a rugged section of "trail", roughly 2/3 of a mile in length and climbs about 800 feet. The incredible views on the other side makes it all worth it, as you can see by the pictures.

Located on Trail Ridge Road at more than 11,500 feet above sea level in Rocky Mountain National Park, the Old Ute Trail is an excellent hike that allows you to enjoy high alpine and tundra scenery without having to do a lot of climbing.

Sky Pond, at an elevation 10,905 feet, sits at the bottom of an amphitheatre of sheer cliff walls that box in the lake on three sides. This an incredibly beautiful setting. One person we met said that the Cathedral Spires that ring the western shore of the lake reminded them of Switzerland.

The area should be amazing...

Our hike to Odessa Lake began from the Bear Lake Trailhead in Glacier Gorge, one of most beautiful areas in Rocky Mountain National Park.
