Government makes $41.3 billion in student loan profits - 0 views

  •
" it's a higher profit level than all but two companies in the world: Exxon Mobil cleared $44.9 billion in 2012, and Apple cleared $41.7 billion."

I agree with this. If the prices for college keep raising then nobody can afford to go to college. All the higher paying jobs require more schooling, but if you don't have a good job then you can't pay for college. It's a deadly cycle. I also think the government is always looking for more money and raising interest rates. That fact doesn't bother me as much as the fact that the money is being spent on public art, landscapes, and totally unnecessary costs. I think that if the money was given back to 'tuition-payers' then maybe people wouldn't care so much.
  •
I think paying such high prices for college is outrageous. Many people come out of college thousands of dollars in debt and have no way of paying back that kind of money. We need people going to college to keep the United States a successful country, with well educated people.
  •
College is getting more and more expensive by the years and sooner or later not many people are going to be able to go to college because of hwo much it cost, but if they do, they would probably be thousands of dollars in debt.

Miriam Carey was the girl in the car at the Capitol shooting. - 1 views

  •
OK I want YOUR opinions on this issue... Was it appropriate for the capital city police shoot her once her car had crashed? She had no weapon, but were they acting to protect public safety? What is your view?
  • ...6 more comments...
  •
In my opinion, they shouldn't of shot her. I'm almost sure that the reason they had chosen to take this action is because they feared that she was trying to attack the white house. It's likely that if the thought that she might be targeting the government wasn't an assumption that had been made, she wouldn't of been shot. That represents inequality in our society, because had it been anyone else that seemed like a target, this person wouldn't of lost her life. Her car was already crashed, and no weapons were in her possession. Knowing that, how could she of been a threat to the public in any way?
  •
She tried to run her car into the white house. She knew what she was doing. She knew she would end up in jail or in trouble at least. If your going to do something stupid, and try to endanger several people's lives over something you can't control, then whatever happens, happens.
  •
I think she was using her vehicle as a weapon but I don't think that means that they needed to shoot her. I think she was crazy for having her kid in the car with her and they should have arrested her to then be able to question her for her actions now they'll never know.
  •
They shouldn't have shot her. They probably did it to avoid more paper work and hassle. Always looking for a reason to kill people who defy the government. Plus she wasn't the only one in the car. Talk about devastating.
  •
It was okay that she was shoot. Because what if she had a bomb. And she was a threat to national security that is why she was shoot
  •
I think they shouldn't have shot her.Especially since her one year old daughter was in the vehicle and probably witnessed the horror of her mom being shot and killed in front of her.
  •
No it wasn't right to do that. Yes they were trying they could of shot somewhere else on her that wouldn't of killed her but just got her to stop what she was doing.
  •
They should have shot her in the arm or leg just to stop her but to kill her in front of her kid is wrong. But she was also wrong for bringing her child with and putting her in a dangerous situation.

"Saudi Arabia is one of the world's last absolute monarchies, and its legal system has long been criticized as arbitrary and unjust. While most nations have moved away from capital punishment, Saudi Arabia had done the opposite. Under new king Salman, executions are up, with dozens carried out this year. "

Since we have been discussing how different types of government use power. Here is a pretty clear example of someone your age who speaks out against the government and the consequences it has. The freedoms that Americans take for granted are certainly not protected everywhere.
  •
Who knows he could have had guns but if he did that's no way to treat someone they tortured him and made him say a forced confession they she'd have treated him that way.
  •
It's kind of sad that he was charged with possessing a gun although there was no evidence. Also because there was no way to not have been accused.
  •
    This is textbook racial profiling.

Obama defeated by his own bureaucracy - 0 views

(CNN) -- When Barack Obama was a newbie president, there was no shortage of ambition or lack of confidence in the government he was about to lead. government should be seen as a force for good, not evil. Sure, he told us, it needed to be "smarter and better," but that could-and would-happen under his watch.

I think trying to voyage to Mars is a good idea because not all of Earth's resources will last forever and there is only so many other options to keep life as normal as possible without changing dramatically.
  •
A voyage to Mars is a huge step in science and I think that it is a great step. We could find resources there that are not on earth. Things that can change our world.
  •
I thing a trip to Mars is a good idea. This could get us closer to discovering what's out int he universe, while the thought is exciting it is also a little scary. I agree with the point that Logan made, we aren't going to have our reasources forever. At some point in time we are going to have to find a solution for other means of reasources.
  •
i think its a good idea because we can find new things and maybe the things will make the earth better
  •
I think it is a good idea, we can discover new things in the universe.
  •
An exploration to Mars is an amazing idea. The resources we have on Earth, won't last forever. And finding other ways that will help us survive is a great thing. It's a pretty big step in helping humans, and Earth itself.
  •
I think that this is a great idea. I think that exploring the unknown in the universe is very exciting and intriguing.
  •
I think that this is good because if people keep treating the world like they do eventually we will run out of resources and need more. Mars could possibly have new and better resources.
  •
I think that this is an amazing idea. I think that exploring and discovering the unknown of any part of the universe is very exciting and mysterious. II find it intriguing that we don't know everything that's out there, and how we keep discovering new things
  •
I understand why people would want to ban allowing police to record someone's private conversation. Although it has helped with a lot of cases involving drugs there should be a limit on how far police can go. They shouldn't be able to listen to innocent people's conversations. It wrong and they wouldn't be able to unhear anything.

White House Computer Networks Hacked - 4 views

  •
Hackers believed to be employed by the Russian government breached White House computer networks in recent weeks, temporarily disrupting services. Citing unnamed sources, the Washington Post reported there was no evidence that hackers had breached classified networks or that any of the systems were damaged.

It's alarming that the White House can be hacked just like other people can, I hope this doesn't mean that Russia has a specific reason to be angry with the US or that they just want to advance over us in some aspect.
  •
I heard that all the programs are out there available to everyone to use but if you used them in the US you would probably get caught red handed. Anything the government uses anyone can use.
  •
    No one likes Russia.
  •
    I kinda like Russia.

Student loan forgiven if you work in public service - 1 views

  •
Are you planning on working for a nonprofit or the government? If so, that's a good first step. The program you're hearing about is designed to help ease the burden of skyrocketing tuition costs while encouraging graduates to enter low-paying but socially important "Main Street" jobs -- like teachers, firefighters, nurses, librarians, court clerks, public defenders and EMTs.
  •
I like this idea. I think it will help many people that have a lot of debt. Only down side is that you have to pay for the first 10 years of your debt. I feel as you could almost pay off your student loans in ten years.

The Finnish government, elected earlier this year, is planning to introduce a tax-free monthly payment of 800 euros ($865) to all adult Finns, regardless of income, wealth or employment status. What's going on with prison reform in America? - CNN.com - 7 views

  •
"In a few weeks, some 6,000 inmates will be released from federal prison because of sweeping changes in U.S. sentencing guidelines for nonviolent drug offenses, approved last year. It's part of a move to overhaul the American criminal justice system, which incarcerates more citizens than any other nation in the world."
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
I agree with what Obama is doing. It can help the prisoners get a job easier and it will save the government money.
  •
I agree with what is going on because then they can become productive tax paying citizens, rather than being given everything in prison. If they are put into the real world they will have to shape up to some extent. If they have already done time, chances are the drugs are out of their system now, and hopefully broke the habit.
  •
I agree with Tia it will help out the government and then we will have more people working throughout the country.

Dazzling airplane patent puts seats on top of aircraft - CNN.com - 8 views

  •
Instead, this concept aims to give passengers an even better view of the skies than the pilot's by seating them on top of the plane, inside a transparent bubble-style canopy. U.S. aerospace technology company Windspeed says its SkyDeck design can be installed on a variety of aircraft, from private jets to wide-bodied commercial planes.

I feel like this can go both ways it can be a really silly idea and rip off the plane or be a great idea to have dates on an aircraft. ( ZAC OLSON )
  •
this would be cool. but this could also make it easier for people to high jack a plan or blow it up because they are in a glass dome on top of the plane, if you where to blow that dome off then the presser from the air would suck everything threw that hole.
  •
I think this is very dangerous idea.
  •
I think this sounds super cool, as long as they could find a way to make it safe.
  •
I think this is a super cool way to get people more interested in flying in airplanes. But there should be multiple tests before hand, just so we know that its intentionally a really safe place to be. Many things are dangerous about this idea, but its pretty cool.
  •
I may be missing something, but what does this have to do with government? I mean it's an interesting thing for sure, but what does a design of a commercial airplane matter to our government.
  •
This would be an interesting thing to make, as long as its safe, Some people would become more interested in flying since airplane rides are usually long and boring.
  •
This is really interesting, i think that people will really like this idea. But also i think they should find a way to keep this idea safe.
  •
I also think they should find a way to keep it safe.
