CNN/ORC poll: Democrats lose 2014 edge following Obamacare uproar - 0 views

  •
What a difference a month makes. A new CNN/ORC International poll indicates a dramatic turnaround in the battle for control of Congress in next year's midterm elections. Democrats a month ago held a 50%-42% advantage among registered voters in a generic ballot, which asked respondents to choose between a Democrat or Republican in their congressional district without identifying the candidates.

Brazil Elects Non-Metaphorical Clown to Congress - 0 views

  •
Americans may feel that the nation is run by a bunch of clowns in Washington, but millions of citizens in Brazil went to the polls Sunday to elect an actual clown to congress. Francisco Everardo Oliveira Silva - known by the clown name Tiririca, which means "grumpy" - received more than 1.3 million votes, more than double that of the next closest candidate, Reuters reported Monday. Tiririca ran for a congressional seat in Sao Paulo state, the nation's most populous, using the campaign slogan "It can't get any worse." He offered no promises other than reporting back to constituents how their representatives spent their time. "What does a congressman do? The truth is I don't know, but vote for me and I'll tell you," he said in campaign advertisements. Public prosecutors had tried to prevent the clown from running because of "evidence that he is illiterate," Reuters said. Tiririca appeared at public events wearing a blond wig and silly outfit. 4 Reasons Obama's New Dark-Money Rules Won't Stop Dark Money - 0 views

Great article. The amount of $$$ spent to get our politicians into office is spiraling out of control. SuperPACs and "dark money" sources make it impossible to see who the candidates are getting financial support from.

The poll, from the Pew Research Center, found that 57% of Republican and Republican-leaning registered voters said they have an "excellent" or "good" impression of their party's presidential candidates. That compares to the 50% that viewed the GOP field positively in September of 2007, and the far fewer -- 44% -- that had a favorable view of the field in May of 2011.

Is the U.S. Navy too small? - CNNPolitics.com - 0 views

  •
But as rival nations, such as China and Russia, expand their own naval capabilities, and with China's increasingly aggressive posture in the South China Sea, GOP presidential candidates are warning voters that America's dominance of the world's oceans could end unless lawmakers add significantly more ships to its arsenal to bring the fleet size closer to historic levels.

Sanders Leads Clinton by 9 in N.H., Gains in Iowa - 1 views

  •
Bernie Sanders has jumped out to a nine-point lead over front-runner Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire, and he's gained ground on her among Iowa voters in the Democratic presidential race, according to a pair of brand-new NBC News/Marist polls.
  •
Bernie Sanders should most definitely be the lead candidate for the democratic party, he views protect women, POC, LGBTQ, and many others. Clinton has too much baggage in politics in my opinion. Although I agree there should be a woman in the White House, Clinton is not the one, but Bernie shares the same views and also doesnt have the baggage.

Protesters sue Trump after encounter with security - CNNPolitics.com - 5 views

  •
Five men who describe themselves in a complaint as "human rights activists of Mexican origin" filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the Republican presidential candidate, his campaign, his company and Keith Schiller, Trump's chief of security. The plaintiffs allege that Trump security officials, namely Schiller, assaulted them as they protested outside of a campaign event.
  •
I feel like the activists were well within their rights and forcing the protectors to move the banner as well as striking one of them is very illegal and wrong. I agree with them that Trump would make this country racist, and he should be protested against as much as humanly possible.

How Donald Trump's deportation plan failed 62 years ago - CNNPolitics.com - 10 views

The rare exception: his immigration plan. As president, Trump says he would eject some 11 million undocumented workers from the country. He cites a specific model for his proposal: "Operation Wetback," an aggressive and unprecedented sweep by U.S.

The ethical issues and problems that a mass roundup of illegal immigrants would create chaos in America. I agree with Trump and the other candidates that it is a problem, but the solution is not to launch a nation wide man hunt and deport people to random places in Mexico.
  •
They tried this a long time ago and it was considered a shameful chapter in american history because they were mean to people when they did it didn't even try to make it a little easy on them.
  •
I think that a big change is coming in the United States. If Trump becomes president, there will no longer be peace in the place we call home. There will be so many people refusing to do what he says he wants to do. I personally feel that he doesn't have the right to say whether or not they are here. If it didn't work before, it won't work now. And him just trying it will cause conflict everywhere.

How much time does Biden have to decide?" - CNNPolitics.com - 0 views

Iowa hosts the first Democratic caucus, but the first deadline isn't in the Hawkeye State -- it's in Georgia. Candidates have to submit a letter of their candidacy to the state parties by October 29. The Georgia primary is Super Tuesday, March 1, which is critical if this becomes a delegate fight.

Poll: Trump approval falls as majority of Americans brace for recession - POLITICO - 1 views

  •
Even if his approval rating drops at all, I don't believe people are going to stop saying he's a "great" president.
  •
I think it's interesting that the article claims Americans are bracing for a recession. We have a record high DOW Jones stock, unemployment is decreasing (more than 20 million new jobs since 2010), and Americans, in general, have more money in their pockets than we did 3 years ago. https://ig.ft.com/sites/numbers/economies/us/ It also piques my interest that the article claims the Trump approval rating as a whole is falling. After the democratic debates, Donald Trump has only increased in followership, rally attendance, etc. This is the reason people keep saying he's a "great" president. You might not like him as a person, I might not like him as a person, but if he continues to put a dent in the public debt, and continues to uphold basic constitutionalist ideals, he will continue to see success in America. I think it's interesting and I predict that the 2020 election will play out very similarly to the 2016 election. The democratic party did everything in their power to stop Trump from becoming president. Both Republicans and Democrats alike turned to personal attacks and scandals. Even if all the candidates are bad, we have to pick the best one. Trump was able to win against the Democrats because they didn't have any solid plans with evidence for the policies they wanted to implement. Trump has an upper-hand because he's never changed too. Democrats have flipped like no other when it comes to policies because they are desperate to be approved of by the younger masses. Trump has always supported a smaller government, focused on the economy, and wanted stricter foreign relations. The same cannot be said about Democrats, their talking points are that of enabling a welfare state, stripping citizens of their 2nd amendment rights, and their false sense of acceptance. tl;dr: orange man bad, but doing his job well.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has a point about the Electoral College (Opinion) - CNN - 5 views

  •
"Trump's path to a second term would most likely come in the same fashion that his first term did -- an Electoral College victory and a popular vote loss. Recent analysis suggests that Trump could lose the popular vote by as many as 5 million votes, but still win the Electoral College."
  •
Maybe I don't understand it well enough, but to me, it doesn't make sense that a presidential candidate can lose the popular vote (you know, the one everyone gets a say in) by such a large margin, but *still* win because of the Electoral College. It doesn't seem legit like someone could simply go for the states with the most votes, and then they have a bigger chance of winning even if the majority don't necessarily like them.
  •
There's a reason that the Electoral College exists. The United States was founded as a democratic-republic. Meaning that we elect representation that decides on the issues. We do not have a direct democracy, and we never have. All the good presidents back to Abraham Lincoln were elected this way. The reason we have an electoral college is to establish a democracy while still protecting the rights of minorities. A purely popular vote system could encourage certain states to modify voter requirements, as it would directly affect the national vote. Statistically, having to win multiple sub-elections is a more effective measure than one large one. It's why we count who won and who lost in sports instead of total points that season.
