When U.S.A! U.S.A! chant is not patriotic - CNN.com - 4 views

"In fact, recently, a group of students at Camarillo High School, northwest of Los Angeles, were ejected after leading a rally at a basketball game against a rival school. "

I think it's okay to cheer for your country when you're trying to support them, but if you're doing it to offend other races, then that's different.
  •
Some people take their patriotism too far. But then again, other races look for reasons to call Americans racist.
  •
Patriotism is huge to Americans. Chanting USA at USA games shows that they are patriotic but when you chant it towards other races because you believe they are not true Americans is a different story. Those people who offended others by chanting that should be punished.
  •
I think representing your country is not offensive. Other people have the option to do the same things in representing what they stand for.
  •
This happened at one of the basketball games I was at this year and I thought it was very disrespectful but nothing was said or done to the student section that said it.
  •
Those people were just stupid, they took the chant to a whole different level how it wasn't meant to be.

Bill C-309 | openparliament.ca - 18 views

  •
OK so it is not being proposed in the USA, but this bill recently introduced in Canada is pretty interesting. Think about the people in our country who protest, but don't want their identity to be shown. Would you support this bill or not?

link seems broken... try this http://openparliament.ca/bills/41-1/C-309/
  •
I think its a good law, people should be able to know who you are. If you really wanna protest, you shouldn't care.
  •
I believe that if you truly believe in the cause, then you should have to face the consequences, even if that means losing your job or your reputation and status.
  •
This bill makes sense. Public safety is at the forefront of this bill, if a protest gets violent or other harmful/unlawful acts occur the persons the are held responsible will be able to be identified. But looking at it from the other side, people might want to conceal their identity at protests, or the masks are part of their protest(example Anonymous). If this bill passes people will be made, if it doesn't pass other people will be mad. Who is the Canadian government ok will making mad?
  •
This bill should be passed because if you're risking yourself by already being there, you should have to show your face. Also, if the situation ever turned violent, that person wouldn't get away with it because their face wasn't exposed so they could be identified.
  •
I think that this bill should be passed because the police should have the right to identify anyone who is protesting. If you want to protest, protecting your identity shouldn't be a major concern because you would want people to know who you are, and what you are speaking out against.
  •
I think if you are going to protest, you are there for a reason, that you strongly believe in, so you should not want to hide who you really are
  •
It should be considered that this is a trade for security by means of liberty. Sacrificing freedom for a small degree of protection. If this bill passes, it could easily snowball to other things (this may be a bit of a reach) such as controlling what you can wear altogether just so that you can be identified at all times just in case you might be possibly considering intending to commit a crime.
  •
As said in earlier comments, I think that if you want to protest IN PUBLIC then the public has the right to know who you are. If you want you can protest in your house and no one needs to know who you are. But out side of you cant hide from the public if your are going to stand outside with a big sign and yell out things in front of people.
  •
I think this should be a bill that becomes a law.
  •
I see it as your there or your protesting for a reason so why hide it. If your protesting you believe something is ether wrong or right so why hide your believes. If you don't want to be seen or noticed here's an easy answer don't go!
  •
I think that you should be able to wear a mask, because if you're protesting something that you believe in, or don't believe in, than it is a personal matter and you should be able to conceal your identity from the public.
  •
I think it might be better if you have to register to be part of a protest but to have the list sealed unless things get violent
  •
I think that they should show there faces. Its there choice to go, so then show yourself, dont hide.

Lance Armstrong sued by government over sponsor money | Reuters - 0 views

"The United Stated suffered damage in that it did not receive the value of the services for which it bargained," the complaint said."

I think this is right for the government to sue Lance because basically they were giving him money that could have possibly been used for illegal drugs.

Inmates defeat Harvard debate team - CNN.com - 2 views

This makes me think of the Toffler reading from our Chpt 1. "It is the truly revolutionary characteristic of knowledge that it can be grasped by the weak and the poor as well. Knowledge is the most democratic source of power." The USA imprisons more people than anywhere else in the world. Obviously there is a lot of talent being untapped by people who chose crime instead of channeling their efforts in positive ways.

Broken discipline tracking systems let teachers flee troubled pasts - 1 views

  •
The USA TODAY NETWORK analysis found many examples of failure of screening at the school district level, including school systems first made aware of troubled teachers on their staffs by journalists.
  •
I think that the federal government needs to create a way for the misconduct of teachers to be tracked. Some of the teachers were losing their licence in one state and just moved to a new state to get another licence. The federal government needs to step in since it is affecting all the states.

The War on marijuana and who's winning - 10 views

This would for sure help our debt if they did end up legalizing it and taxing it!
  • ...3 more comments...
  •
Also if it was legal the government could regulate it, like they do alcohol. It'd make marijuana a lot safer.
  •
At the moment we are being told that we are winning the war by the gov't. But the truth is hiding behind the government. They wont tell us the truth because it would show a weakness. We are losing.
  •
how is cannabis not safe? more people die from alcohol related incidents a year than weed for sure, and weed cant poison people. so i vote yes! legalize it.
  •
I am actually surprised that the govt hasn't legalized it yet because the govt loves money and marijuana sales makes on average 1.5 billion dollars a year so in about 10 years (maybe) the USA could actually not be in debt.
  •
i dont see why marijuana is not legal anymore its actually funny how our first president grew marijuana as a cash crop

15-year-old Connecticut boy who committed suicide was bullied - 3 views

  •
Sad, why do people have to be so cruel
  • ...6 more comments...
  •
Schools punish bullies more than just a simple slap on the hand. Bullies should be suspended. Then if bullying continues expel them because they have a much greater effect on people than we think.
  •
I spent some time reading over the CNN comments on this article. It is clear to me how widespread the issue still is, so much of the "advice" offered was 'get revenge' posts or name calling. I am always eager to hear student's thoughts on this issue. How does ALHS rate in your eyes? Do we do enough to educate and prevent this kind of thing, or are we still perpetuating more problems?
  •
My opinion of this is, that AL does not do enough against bullying. We should be doing more to stop it then just talking about it like we have done in the past.
  •
I agree with the Connecticut post, the school does nothing about the bullying even though we all know its a huge issue. Like the post said, all the school does is say to the bully "say your sorry" and to them the problem is solved.
  •
I wonder if the bullies even care when they go too far and kids kill themselves over it.
  •
The school is basically like every other school (at least here in the USA) and don't punish bullying enough. I think along with the bullies the school should be charged with his death since help is what the depressed kid was looking for and he didn't get it.
  •
Bullying is to hard to detect now a days hard to stop
  •
Here at our school, bullying is a big issue when basing it off of what I see on a typical day. There are students and teachers who do their best to prevent it as much as possible, but then there are some who allow it to happen without ever making any sort of attempt to stop it. I do not think that charges should be made against anyone for this case, however. To me it's like throwing a rock at nothing and expecting it to hit something. How would pressing charges do anything? How do you know that doing so would affect the people who had bullied the kid in the first place? Unless there's evidence of who committed the actions, why, and how, then I don't think that suing anyone would be justified. But, I do believe that making and enforcing more rules to target bullying would help decrease it, as well as make people more conscious of how their words and actions affect people.
