Pentagon's Shape-Shifting Bot Folds Into Boat, Plane | Danger Room | Wired.com - 0 views

  • Darpa-backed electrical engineers at the two schools released the stunning results: a shape-shifting sheet of rigid tiles and elastomer joints that can fold itself into a little plane or a boat on demand.
  • In Darpa’s dreams, this work will eventually lead to everything from morphing aircraft to self-styling uniforms to a “universal spare part.”

haha :) well.. don't shoot me Dario. I wasn't involved in this disclosure. But now that the link is public, you might all want to consider subscribing to their feed: http://ewds.strath.ac.uk/space/Podcasts.aspx They have some nice talks there. One of them is by Ken McLeod, the science fiction writer. Is anyone else with me on the idea that we should also invite science fiction writers for science coffees? :)

So nice to hear Dario again! :-) But apparently UoS needs someone a bit more skilled to handle these videos...

Information converted to energy - physicsworld.com - 4 views

  • By tracking the particle's motion using a video camera and then using image-analysis software to identify when the particle had rotated against the field, the researchers were able to raise the metaphorical barrier behind it by inverting the field's phase. In this way they could gradually raise the potential of the particle even though they had not imparted any energy to it directly.
  • "Nobody thinks of using bits to boil water," he says, "but that would in principle be possible at nanometre scales." And he speculates that molecular processes occurring in nature might already be converting information to energy in some way. "The message is that processes taking place on the nanoscale are completely different from those we are familiar with, and that information is part of that picture."

Acasa - Media - 1 views

  •
Acasa was born out of Singularity University, a unique, world-changing institution founded in 2008 by Ray Kurzweil and Peter Diamandis. After nine weeks at NASA Ames, the home of Singularity University, four teams emerged with projects focused on one common goal-to positively affect the lives of one billion people over ten years. Our team has designed a business plan to leverage advances in rapid 3D additive manufacturing technologies in order to construct affordable, customizable housing for the developing world. This environmentally sustainable solution has the potential to create a powerful new paradigm for improving housing construction using local resources.

cool video, i'd like to see that in reality... Though i'm not sure it would be less expansive than the very cheap workers you can get on site ! You need to build the robot, to bring it on-site, highly specialised enginneers to supervize the project, etc...
  •
yeah I am not sure about that either but the idea seems nice though

Fruit Fly Aerial Maneuver Explained - 1 views

  • Insects can execute flying feats more impressive than fighter jets, and a team of researchers has now learned the trick behind one of them. They used high speed video cameras and a new 3D reconstruction technique to show how fruit flies execute their acrobatic turns. As they report in the 9 April Physical Review Letters, despite the complex wing motions, a fly can execute quick pirouettes by adjusting just a single parameter that controls the difference between the way its left and right wings oscillate. The results may be relevant for engineers designing flight control strategies for tiny robotic insects for search-and-rescue and surveillance.
