Lasers May Solve the Black Hole Information Paradox - 0 views

  •
"In an effort to help solve the black hole information paradox that has immersed theoretical physics in an ocean of soul searching for the past two years, two researchers have thrown their hats into the ring with a novel solution: Lasers. Technically, we're not talking about the little flashy devices you use to keep your cat entertained, we're talking about the underlying physics that produces laser light and applying it to information that falls into a black hole. According to the researchers, who published a paper earlier this month to the journal Classical and Quantum Gravity (abstract), the secret to sidestepping the black hole information paradox (and, by extension, the 'firewall' hypothesis that was recently argued against by Stephen Hawking) lies in stimulated emission of radiation (the underlying physics that generates laser light) at the event horizon that is distinct from Hawking radiation, but preserves information as matter falls into a black hole."

Hydrogen storage in Graphene Origami nanoboxes - 2 views

  •
A total storage of 9.5 wt% H2 could be reached which is above the 7.5wt% set by the DoE for market requirements of hydrogen vehicles. The nanoboxes can be opened and closed using electric fields.

Thinking wind turbines - 0 views

  •
Siemens is using neural networks to improve operation of wind turbines, reducing maintenaince needs and improving output by one precent. It seems even that Siemens has quite a large neural network study group, probably linked to german universities, with various examples in practice (see websie)

Worlds first 3D acoustic cloaking device - 1 views

  •
Using little more than a few perforated sheets of plastic and a staggering amount of number crunching, Duke engineers have demonstrated the world's first three-dimensional acoustic cloak. The new device reroutes sound waves to create the impression that both the cloak and anything beneath it are not there.

Role of data visualization in the scientific community @britishlibrary - 1 views

  •
In a new exhibition titled Beautiful Science: Picturing Data, Inspiring Insight [bl.uk], the British Library pays homage to the important role data visualization plays in the scientific process. The exhibition can be visited from 20 February until 26 May 2014, and contains works ranging from John Snow's plotting of the 1854 London cholera infections on a map to colourful depictions of the Tree of Life.

The future of the great barrier reef - 1 views

  •
A worrying future looms as scientist predict the iconic great barrier reef is at a turning point and could experience irreversible damage before 2030 if nothing is done right now. Well actually, I am not sure if anything can be done as the two degree rise (and changes in ocean temperature/acidity probably?) will likely happen in any case due to delayed effects of decades of pollution, whether or not we stop now with emissions will probably not make much difference. :(

The people who change the world... #thenextweb - 1 views

  •
Love tip 3.. thats why I am at the ACT of course :) 3. Surround yourself with pros Surround yourself with people who are self-assured, and live life without comprising their core values. These people will rub off on you quickly. finally.. The world is already full of people who obey the status quo. But the people who don't give a fuck are the ones that change the world.

The big data brain drain - 3 views

  •
Echoing this, in 2009 Google researchers Alon Halevy, Peter Norvig, and Fernando Pereira penned an article under the title The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Data. In it, they describe the surprising insight that given enough data, often the choice of mathematical model stops being as important - that particularly for their task of automated language translation, "simple models and a lot of data trump more elaborate models based on less data." If we make the leap and assume that this insight can be at least partially extended to fields beyond natural language processing, what we can expect is a situation in which domain knowledge is increasingly trumped by "mere" data-mining skills. I would argue that this prediction has already begun to pan-out: in a wide array of academic fields, the ability to effectively process data is superseding other more classical modes of research.

Real-time measurements inside a battery show dynamics of electrochemical processes (video) - 0 views

  •
"As we start to sweep the potential, we didn't initially observe anything," said lead author Robert Sacci, a postdoctoral research fellow with ORNL's FIRST Energy Frontier Research Center. "Then we started seeing shadows-presumably polymeric SEI-forming into a dendritic pattern. It looks like a snowflake forming from the electrode." nice fractals.. as always

Offshore wind farms hold potential to weaken hurricanes - 2 views

  •
What he found was that wind turbines "could disrupt a hurricane enough to reduce peak wind speeds by up to 92 mph and decrease storm surge by up to 79%."

Autonomous drones flock like birds (video) #Nature - 2 views

  •
A Hungarian team has created the first drones that can fly as a coordinated flock. The researchers watched as the ten autonomous robots took to the air in a field outside Budapest, zipping through the open sky, flying in formation or even following a leader, all without any central control.

Biomass based fuel cells - 0 views

  •
Despite the benefits of low-temperature fuel cell technologies, they cannot directly use biomass as a fuel because of the lack of an effective catalyst system. However, Georgia Institute of Technology researchers have developed a low-temperature fuel cell that directly converts a wide variety of biomass sources to electricity. Possible application areas are local electricity supply in developing countries

Nanophononic metamaterials to boost thermoelectric performance - 0 views

  •
Thermoelectric materials can see their performance radically improved via the utilization of an array of 'nanoscale pillars,' according to new research from the University of Colorado Boulder. These tiny pillars, built directly onto the thermoelectric material, will reduce the heat flow through the material by a factor of two while not affecting the electrical flow.

Liquid metal pump a breakthrough for micro-fluidics (video) - 0 views

  •
RMIT University researchers in Melbourne, Australia, have developed the world's first liquid metal enabled pump, a revolutionary new micro-scale device with no mechanical parts. The unique design will enable micro-fluidics and lab-on-a-chip technology to finally realise their potential, with applications ranging from biomedicine to biofuels.

The risk of geoengineering (or when abruptly stopping..) - 2 views

  •
The researchers used a global climate model to show that if an extreme emissions pathway -- RCP8.5 -- is followed up until 2035, allowing temperatures to rise 1°C above the 1970-1999 mean, and then SRM (Solar Radiation Management) is implemented for 25 years and suddenly stopped, global temperatures could increase by 4°C in the following decades.

Self-fueled robotic grass mower #EcoMow - 2 views

  •
The grass mower uses the cut grass as fuel, but can also turn the grass into dried pellets for later use, for example for heating etc.
