Lockheed Martin buys first D-Wave quantum computing system - 1 views

  • D-Wave develops computing systems that leverage the physics of quantum mechanics in order to address problems that are hard for traditional methods to solve in a cost-effective amount of time. Examples of such problems include software verification and validation, financial risk analysis, affinity mapping and sentiment analysis, object recognition in images, medical imaging classification, compressed sensing and bioinformatics.
  •
According to the company's wikipedia page, the computer costs $ 10 million. Can we then declare Quantum Computing has officially arrived?! quotes from elsewhere in the site: "first commercial quantum computing system on the market"; "our current superconducting 128-qubit processor chip is housed inside a cryogenics system within a 10 square meter shielded room" Link to the company's scientific publications. Interestingly, this company seems to have been running a BOINC project, AQUA@home, to "predict the performance of superconducting adiabatic quantum computers on a variety of hard problems arising in fields ranging from materials science to machine learning. AQUA@home uses Internet-connected computers to help design and analyze quantum computing algorithms, using Quantum Monte Carlo techniques". List of papers coming out of it.

Frozen cells are more likely to survive with the help of microfluidic technology - 0 views

  • Scientists have used microfluidic technology to improve the survival rates of frozen cells.
  • Utkan Demirci, at Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, US, and colleagues have increased the chance of cell survival by 25 per cent over standard cryopreservation methods.

One-way Mirror for Sound Waves | Physical Review Focus - 0 views

  • If the technique is practical, it could give designers new flexibility in making ultrasonic sources like those used in medical imaging.

Medical Xpress: Newly discovered hormone mimics the effects of exercise - 0 views

  •
"Hormones are molecules that act as the body's signals, triggering various physiological responses. The newly discovered hormone, dubbed "MOTS-c," primarily targets muscle tissue, where it restores insulin sensitivity, counteracting diet-induced and age-dependent insulin resistance." Good news for long distance space travelers?

To Sleep, Perchance to Clean - University of Rochester Medical Center - 2 views

  •
Why do we sleep? One answer could be: to clear waste products accumulated during the day. To prevent aging and neurodegeneration, the body must maintain homeostasis. What would happen if we experience chronic sleep loss? What would happen if microgravity impairs the cerebrospinal fluid to flush the brain? What would happen if cosmic radiations increase the amount of daily waste products?
