[1105.1293] Eigengestures for natural human computer interface - 1 views

  •
We present the application of Principal Component Analysis for data acquired during the design of a natural gesture interface. We investigate the concept of an eigengesture for motion capture hand gesture data and present the visualisation of principal components obtained in the course of conducted experiments. We also show the influence of dimensionality reduction on reconstructed gesture data quality.

New algorithm offers ability to influence systems such as living cells or social networks - 3 views

  • a new computational model that can analyze any type of complex network -- biological, social or electronic -- and reveal the critical points that can be used to control the entire system.
  • Slotine and his colleagues applied traditional control theory to these recent advances, devising a new model for controlling complex, self-assembling networks.
  • Yang-Yu Liu, Jean-Jacques Slotine, Albert-László Barabási. Controllability of complex networks. Nature, 2011; 473 (7346): 167 DOI: 10.1038/nature10011

Sounds too super to be true, no?

For each, they calculated the percentage of points that need to be controlled in order to gain control of the entire system.

    > Sounds too super to be true, no? Yeah, how else may it sound, being a combination of hi-quality (I assume) research targeted at attracting funding, raised to the power of Science Daily's pop-pseudo-scientific journalists' bu****it? Original article starts with a cool sentence too: > The ultimate proof of our understanding of natural or technological systems is reflected in our ability to control them. ...a good starting point for a never-ending philosophers' debate... Now seriously, because of a big name behind the study, I'm very curious to read the original article. Although I expect the conclusion to be that in practical cases (i.e. the cases of "networks" you *would like to* "control"), you need to control all nodes or something equally impractical...
  •
then I am looking forward to reading your conclusions here after you will have actually read the paper

anything happening on this since 3 years?
  •
yes it seems like. most of it seems however directed toward understanding this effect, and not toward applications. But i'm still convinced that we could find many very interesting applications !!! a few references from ADS: 1 2011PhRvA..83f3807B 1.000 06/2011 A E X R C U Brida, G.; Chekhova, M. V.; Fornaro, G. They'll probably launch the concept this month. It doesn't look very realistic, but I like the stage separation.
  •
I like the 4 stage system. But how did they solve the plume issue ?
  •
The plume issue is not that difficult. I think they used something similar on Apollo LES. The problem is stabilizing the entire system, which is extremely difficult. The entire system will most likely plummet down after the solar balloon phase (which is the only phase they tested before). At least they are not using government money :).

Forecasting Brain Science and its impact on technology - 3 views

  •
For those sceptics about the use of neuroscience: A 20min talk (by a computer scientist!) about brain science and its use to build intelligent technology
  •
so what does he sell? 22' without saying anything? Just "intelligence is prediction" - great but what are you gonna do mate?
  •
I do not think his intention is to sell anything... Just to make people (from a non neuroscience background) aware that brain science will have an impact on technology. Also: I am a firm believer in that "prediction"defines intelligence, as he states, and that making machines that behave in such a way is the way to go :) (the talk is from 2003 btw :p)

I always new it - the future of telecom is with pigeons ... (what happened to our idea of the pigeon inspired navigator??)
  •
Well, it's been newn... I mean known since computer networks were invented that it'll take them a long time to match with a throughput of a train carrying recorded media. The point is that throughput is not the only important parameter: the other is response time... (BTW let's see how this commenting feature works, not many folks seem to use it...)
  •
I do use it quite regularily .... a train full of DVDs and flash drives, yes ok - but a pigeon!!!!
