Mapping Turbulence in the Solar Wind - 0 views

  • a team reports studying the turbulent flow of solar wind particles by monitoring the accompanying waves of magnetic field. The team used a cluster of satellites to measure the field in unprecedented spatial detail. They found that the waves aren't equally strong in all directions but are larger in certain preferred directions, as theorists had predicted. The observation will help astrophysicists better understand the consequences of the solar wind, including its effect on the transmission of cosmic rays, particles that arrive at Earth from elsewhere in our galaxy.

Dark matter 'no result' comes under fire - 3 views

  • On Monday the XENON100 collaboration published an analysis of the first experimental results from its dark-matter detector. It reported no evidence of dark matter, the substance thought to constitute over 80% of mass in the universe. The experiment covered a similar parameter range as dark-matter searches DAMA and CoGeNT, which have previously claimed possible evidence for dark matter. As a result, the XENON100 team concluded that both the DAMA and CoGeNT evidence could be excluded. But now the DAMA and CoGeNT collaborations claim that the XENON100 researchers' analysis is flawed, and that their original evidence for dark matter should remain intact

  • Now Frederico Francisco at the Instituto de Plasmas e Fusao Nuclear in Lisbon Portugal, and a few pals, say they've worked out where the thermal calculations went wrong. These guys have redone the calculations using a computer model of not only how the heat is emitted but how it is reflected off the various parts of the spacecraft too. The reflections turn out to be crucial.

    This is really cool. I know one of the authors and he is a good guy... the only thing that leaves me unsatisfied is that if the whole issue is related to thermal effects one should have seen the Pioneer effect all the time and not only at about 10 AU... ...or is there some thermal process that kicked in only at this distance?

Turyshev concludes, "The most likely cause of the Pioneer anomaly is the anisotropic emission of on-board heat.""
