A new mechanism was discovered on how H2 and N2 participate in the radiation budget. This may help to resolve the "faint young sun paradox", a hypothesis according to which during the earlier age of the solar system when sun radiation had lower intensity than now, the earth was warmer. Extended, it could reassess the past habitability of Mars.

Splitting water with TiO2 to generate H2

Solvay announced today it has successfully commissioned its 1 MegaWatt (MW) industrial demonstration Fuel Cell at the SolVin plant in Lillo, Antwerp, Belgium. This Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cell converts coproduced hydrogen (H2) in the plant into electricity and is now producing for weeks at a steady rate. The Fuel Cell has generated over 500 MWh in about 800 hours of operation, which amounts to the electricity consumption of 1370 families during the same time frame.

A total storage of 9.5 wt% H2 could be reached which is above the 7.5wt% set by the DoE for market requirements of hydrogen vehicles. The nanoboxes can be opened and closed using electric fields.

Researchers have managed to create a materials that can extract CO2 from a humid environment, which was up to now not possible due to water blocking the absorption. With this hurdle taken, it may be possible to extract CO2 in large quantities from the atmopshere. This would then either be stored or possible even processed with H2 to form carbohydrates. Marsian atmosphere?
