I realized something tonight as I read the story of how Virginia Tech professor John Boyer landed a Skype interview for his World Regions class with Aung Sun Suu Kyi, leader of the democratic movement in Burma - I don't give near enough credit to Skype as a disruptive educational Technology.

Turns out that Agile isn't just for nerds -- er, tech professionals -- anymore. More and more it's being used for the management of non-software -- nay, non-technical -- projects.

The instructional design staff supporting faculty developing online courses historically focused primarily on faculty receiving a course release for one semester for which their department was compensated under an award from the Provost's office. The goal was to complete development within this one semester. Unfortunately, that was a rare occurrence. As a result, many course development projects lingered, funds were encumbered, and online courses were taught without being completely developed and reviewed for quality assurance. In the Spring of 2013, the approach changed. we invited faculty receiving awards to join a community focusing on the practice of developing high-quality online courses. We adopted a cohort approach to project-based professional development in the form of an online course.

Perhaps too simple for college students, but....

A new program will give grants to a variety of high-tech teaching projects, with the hope of helping low-income students better succeed in their studies. Next Gen Learning Challenges, led by Educause, a nonprofit that supports education technology, is designed to find technology-based approaches to improve college readiness and completion among low-income students.

Education both online and hybridized has benefited greatly from the contributions of the course management system Blackboard (and, more recently, Angel). No matter the subject, teachers have found ways to use the program to make their classes run so much smoother. But maneuvering the interface can seem a little intimidating at first, and that's where advice from several different educational institutions comes in handy! Beyond the basics, they illustrate some of the best streamlining tips and tricks that Blackboard has to offer. However, please keep in mind that such an ever-changing technology may render many of these tidbits obsolete - or only viable in certain versions. Should any of the ideas presented here prove incompatible, contact the school in question's tech support/computer services center for more personalized instruction.

n a lot of ways, millions of users have found Twitter as a useful tool. Take journalists, for example. According to a recent survey, 37 percent of journalists said they are on Twitter. It's no longer a small tech company that is troubled by servers being down (keeping fingers crossed). Now your non-techie friends are using it. It's referenced in commercials. It's mainstream.
