Power to the People! Jennifer Ditkoff, Keene State College Give students the power to guide their own education. Using Wallwisher an instructor gains insight on student needs and opens up a classroom discussion. After library instruction short tutorials are posted on Voicethread. Students experiment with the concepts, actively participating in assessing their own research efforts, as well as their classmates. Students have control over their own learning experience and can revisit the course materials throughout the semester to add content, ask questions, and receive feedback. Diigo is used rather than a static handout. Students provide links to helpful materials for their peers, highlighting the community aspect of ongoing education. Jennifer Ditkoff has worked in academic, public and medical libraries, learning every type of classification system, including the elusive Cutter system. When she is not troubleshooting electronic resources, she teaches information literacy, staffs the reference desk, and shows up early to committee meetings. She enjoys learning about new technologies.

7 Things You Should Know About Open Educational Resources | EDUCAUSE - 0 views

  •
Open educational resources (OER) are any resources available at little or no cost that can be used for teaching, learning, or research. The term can include textbooks, course readings, and other learning content; simulations, games, and other applications; syllabi, quizzes, and assessment tools; and virtually any other educational material. Open resources are issued under a license that spells out how they can be used: Some may only be used in their original form; in other cases, resources can be modified, remixed, and redistributed. OER expand the access to educational resources to more learners, more of the time, and they have the potential to spur pedagogical innovation, introducing new alternatives for effective teaching.

7 Basic Rules for Making Charts and Graphs - 0 views

  •
Charts and graphs have found their way into news, presentations, and comics with users from art to design to statistics. The design principles for these data graphics will vary depending on what you're using it for. Making something for a presentation? You'll want to keep it extremely simple and avoid using a lot of text. Designing a graphic for a newspaper? You'll have to deal with size constraints and try to explain the important parts of your graphic.

Practical Advice for Teaching with Twitter - ProfHacker - The Chronicle of Higher Educa... - 0 views

  •
kCELTER's - we can use this to frame our conversation about WHY use Twitter. Nice and simple post to get started. How do you actually do it? I'm going to leave behind the pedagogy (mostly) in this post, and instead offer some practical advice for teaching with Twitter. I'll cover six aspects of Twitter integration where it pays to plan ahead of time (i.e. sometime last week): organization, access, frequency, substance, archiving, and assessment. I'll deal with of each of these areas in turn, but before I do, and if you're new to Twitter, I want to urge you to read Ryan Cordell's comprehensive ProfHacker primer on Twitter. Ryan addresses many common questions about Twitter, and his guide is perfect for sharing with colleagues-and students-before you move into the nuts-and-bolts aspects of teaching with Twitter.

Twittering in the classroom : Aetiology - 0 views

  •
This fall, I am requiring the students in my seminar to have a Twitter account. Students will post items on a regular basis, using the hashtag #BIO361. We also will devote some time on a regular basis to discussing items or responses from Twitter. Our first post probably will be on the first day of classes - Tuesday, August 24, 2010. For this project to work most effectively, we need a critical mass of people outside of our class to participate. If you, your students, friends, or colleagues would like to join us, please do. We will appreciate any new comments, retweets, or responses. I'm looking forward to an engaging discussion throughout the semester.

line spacing changes - Google Sites Help - 0 views

  • I've frequently run into the same problem.  When I use a font like Georgia with a size of 18, the bottom of some of the letters run into the top of the letters on the line below.   It looks ugly.I looked up the standard HTML & CSS code:  the command line-height: xxx% is available. The HTML source for my page had a section that read:<div style="text-align: left;"><font style="font-family: times new roman, serif;" size="5">House UpFront takes the wonderful accents and accessories from Shops <br>I modified it to include:<div style="text-align: left; line-height: 200%;"><font style="font-family: times new roman, serif;" size="5">House UpFront takes the wonderful accents and accessories from Shops <br>This corrected the vertical spacing problem.  Sorry I could not find a more elegant solution.  But at least this corrects the problem.Barry

Asperger's Conversations: Classes Start Tomorrow: Shouldn't Profs learn from students a... - 1 views

I've been making podcasts for many years and, at one point, was one of about 200 podcasters on the planet (back in the day).  Making a podcast using, say, Audacity, never seemed very difficult, but as my carpenter is fond of saying: "It's easy...if you know how to do it."  But since I went MAC this summer, GarageBand has been my great discovery and 14 and 15 year olders have become my new consultants (seriously).  With GB you can not only make podcasts easily, but you can make real, real cool podcasts which sound as good as (sometimes even better) than on-air radio programs.  I just posted my first podcast using GB about a week ago and already I'm chopping at the bit to re-do the production now that I have another week of GB experience under my belt.

Everyone learns differently. Social media marketing has a lot of moving parts and processes which make it hard to get up to speed. This challenge is only compounded by the ever-changing nature of the market, in which new applications and opportunities arise daily.
