Although Google has been playing with some fun image search toys in its lab and the official Google Image Search has recently significantly upped its game, some of its most hyped features - color search, instant scrolling, hover preview - are but mere shadows of sleeker, better versions that geekier, more sophisticated image search tools offer. Here are seven of our favorites.

Time Search is a good general resource for history teachers and students. Simply enter a year, press "go" and you're shown a list of significant events that happened in that year. Scroll up or down the list to see events that happened early or late in the year. Time Search lists events that happened worldwide. You can select historical themes to narrow your list of events. We don't guarantee the validity of the licenses since we can't control what people decide to upload to Flickr. So, be pragmatic when you decide what photo to use.
