    Think-Pair-Share is a strategy designed to provide students with "food for thought" on a given topics enabling them to formulate individual ideas and share these ideas with another student. It is a learning strategy developed by Lyman and associates to encourage student classroom participation. Rather than using a basic recitation method in which a teacher poses a question and one student offers a response, Think-Pair-Share encourages a high degree of pupil response and can help keep students on task. What is its purpose? * Providing "think time" increases quality of student responses. * Students become actively involved in thinking about the concepts presented in the lesson. * Research tells us that we need time to mentally "chew over" new ideas in order to store them in memory. When teachers present too much information all at once, much of that information is lost. If we give students time to "think-pair-share" throughout the lesson, more of the critical information is retained. * When students talk over new ideas, they are forced to make sense of those new ideas in terms of their prior knowledge. Their misunderstandings about the topic are often revealed (and resolved) during this discussion stage. * Students are more willing to participate since they don't feel the peer pressure involved in responding in front of the whole class. * Think-Pair-Share is easy to use on the spur of the moment. * Easy to use in large classes. Last month, a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro announced that she was attempting something similar for graduate student employees. Both projects are attempts at gathering information -- on the salaries of adjuncts and graduate students -- where rigorously researched data is difficult to come by. Shared Futures - A community for sharing resources on global learning. - 0 views

    KSC Faculty at Institute on Global Learning This summer, a team of Keene State faculty members from all three academic schools will participate in "Shared Futures: General Education for a Global Century," an institute sponsored by the American Association of Colleges and Universities to help faculty integrate global perspectives across the curriculum. The institute will be held in Ellicott City, Md., from July 31 to August 5, and will draw faculty from 32 colleges and universities. During the fall 2011 semester, the core Keene State team will draw in faculty and staff from across campus to implement the goals and strategies developed at the institute. By building a network of educators dedicated to this integrative work, Shared Futures facilitates curricular change and faculty development on campuses nationwide. Through an online social network, the initiative hopes to create new connections between educators and new opportunities for partnership and learning. Keene State faculty members attending the institute include professors Charles Weed (political science), Margaret Henning (health sciences), Patricia Pedroza (women's and gender studies), and Rich Blatchly (chemistry).     Have you ever wanted to look into the shape and structure of a suckermouth armored catfish? Well, the Digital Morphology website makes that possible. Created as part of the National Science Foundation Digital Library at The University of Texas at Austin, this library includes hundreds of 2D and 3D visualizations of the internal and external structure of living and extinct vertebrates, and a number of invertebrates as well. These images are generated by a X-ray CT scanner, which has greater resolution and penetrating power than a conventional medical diagnostic CAT scanner. Visitors can browse the library by scientific name, common name, or the popular What's New? area. The homepage includes eight different overview pages, which provide narrative essays and images of dinosaurs, tapirs, bats, and primates. Project Description - Teaching Science in NH - 2 views

    The Community of Scientists project seeks to pair up NH classrooms for inquiry-based science co-investigations, using technology for video and voice communication.  Teachers at Winchester School (K-8) in Winchester, NH, are working out initial technology questions by creating a Community of Scientists with Elementary Education Methods II students at Keene State College. The pilot project is to co-investigate hydroponics as a sustainable option for growing food rapidly in smaller areas. It entails setting up a simple classroom hydroponics station where students will explore how to best grow plants hydroponically.  KSC students will conduct and monitor their hydroponics experiments while students in Winchester School conduct similar experiment in their own hydroponic station in their classroom.  Students will then video chat with their co-investigators and share their findings.

    I've been making podcasts for many years and, at one point, was one of about 200 podcasters on the planet (back in the day).  Making a podcast using, say, Audacity, never seemed very difficult, but as my carpenter is fond of saying: "It's easy...if you know how to do it."  But since I went MAC this summer, GarageBand has been my great discovery and 14 and 15 year olders have become my new consultants (seriously).  With GB you can not only make podcasts easily, but you can make real, real cool podcasts which sound as good as (sometimes even better) than on-air radio programs.  I just posted my first podcast using GB about a week ago and already I'm chopping at the bit to re-do the production now that I have another week of GB experience under my belt.
