Bookshare is the world's largest online accessible library for people with print disabilities. Through its technology initiatives and partnerships, Bookshare seeks to raise the floor on accessibility issues so that individuals with print dis-abilities have the same ease of access to print materials as people without disabilities.

In 2007, Bookshare received a $32 million five-year award from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), to provide free access for all U.S. students with a qualified print disability.

Bookshare has more than 70,000 legally scanned books including fiction, non-fiction, textbooks, educational reading, newspapers, magazines, and New York Times best-sellers. Books are converted into the latest DAISY 3.0 Format (Digital Accessible Information System) and BRF (Braille Ready Format). Members may choose to download books with or without images.

Bookshare offers members two free software applications that read digital text: READ:OutLoud Bookshare Edition by Don Johnston and Victor Reader Soft Bookshare Edition by HumanWare. Students can simultaneously see and hear a book's content read aloud through quality synthesized Acapela voices for a multisensory reading experience.
