Software testing methods are divided into white and black-box testing. White-box testing is also known as clear box testing, glass box testing, transparent box testing, and structural testing. Black-box testing treats the software as a "black box", examining functionality without any knowledge of internal implementation, without seeing the source code.

Software testing is an investigation conducted to provide stakeholders with information about the quality of the software product or service under test. Software testing can also provide an objective, independent view of the software to allow the business to appreciate and understand the risks of software implementation.

The scope of Software Testing includes examination of code, execution of that code in various environments and conditions as well as examining the aspects of code. In the current culture of software development, a testing organization may be separate from the development team.
