Ice Energy has a novel solution for the electricity challenges of the 21st century: Make Popsicles. Put another way, the company wants to freeze water at night in refrigerator-like boxes adjacent to commercial air conditioners and then thaw it during the day, when power demand is highest. This would theoretically allow AC-hungry commercial buildings in warm climates to cut energy use during heat waves, by shutting air conditioners down while still providing cool air to buildings from melting ice. After seven years of development and testing, the Windsor, Colo.-based company signed an agreement recently with the Southern California Public Power Authority here to deploy some 6,000 Popsicle-making units at 1,500 locations in the utility's service territory around Los Angeles. Ice Energy says the units, called Ice Bears, will lead to a 30 percent fuel reduction for the utility through avoided use of so-called peaker generation plants, which are only turned on when demand is highest.

You just built a breadboard of your expert design. You did all the simulations needed before going to layout, and reviewed the manufacturer's suggested techniques for a good thermal design for the particular package chosen. You even did your due diligence in going through the initial thermal analysis equations on paper to be sure not to exceed IC junction temperatures with a comfortable margin. ZMD AG has launched the second wave of the company's ZLED family of LED control solutions with two new low-voltage ICs designed for battery-powered handheld devices. The ZLED7012 and ZLED7022 incorporate low-noise, constant-frequency charge pump DC/DC converters that can efficiently drive up to four (ZLED7012) or six (ZLED7022) strings of LEDs.

Samplify Systems Inc. (Santa Clara, Calif.) has announced an autofocus beamforming technology for ultrasound imaging. The technology uses a 32-channel ultrasound analog front-end receiver module in an ultra-small small-outline dual-in-line configuration based on the SAM1600 family of compressing ADCs.

FPGA devices create compelling business drivers generating a tidal wave of FPGA adoption for the implementation of system PCB designs. Obviously, the time to market advantages and capacity/performance characteristics of FPGA devices have delivered on the promise for a viable alternative to more capital resource intensive custom IC/ASIC solutions as well as a successful consolidation vehicle for standard "off the shelf" components in system design creation.
