In Uttar Pradesh, a 'mystery fever' killed as many as 84 people in the last six weeks, following which the Yogi Adityanath government has issued a high alert across the state. Bareilly recorded the highest number of deaths, 24, and in nearby Badaun district, 23 casualties were reported.

The state of Uttarakhand was separated from its former territory of Uttar Pradesh in 2000 with the objective of exclusively providing development aid to more than 16,000 sparsely inhabited villages in its mountainous areas. But in the sixteen years following this separation, little has been done to improve healthcare and other basic facilities.

At least 36 persons in Bareilly and adjoining Badaun districts of Uttar Pradesh have succumbed to fever in the last 15 days, officials said Tuesday. The state government has constituted three teams of doctors to look into the cases in Bareilly and Badaun, UP DG (Health) Padmakar Singh said.

A man, desperate for a son, allegedly threw his 18-month daughter from the terrace of his home in a Uttar Pradesh village after his wife gave birth to another girl, police said today. The toddler, Kavya, was seriously injured after the incident in Pardhauli village and has been admitted to hospital.
