DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY: THE GREENHOUSE OF EDUCATION TODAY

    Intro:

Technology in terms of increasing literacy skills is a debatable topic. Not because it hasn't worked, but because when it is not implemented & used properly it doesn't have an impact. Fortunately, my esteemed team & I found many credible examples of today's technology enhancing literacy among students in the forms of gaming, internet, television, texting & social media posting. Main components to traditional teaching include reading, writing & arithmetic. New methods of teaching using technological advances aren't lacking in that area in any aspect. On the contrary, the same sets of knowledge are received better with these new methods utilizing the learning style of todays' students. Speaking on students of today, we are referring to the "Digital Native", a term coined by Marc Prensky meaning someone exposed to or born in the era of digital technology as a first language because it gets stored in a separate part of the brain if learned early in life. Digital Native youth today seem to love video gaming, television & internet. Taking those same 3 functions & creating interactive programs to promote literacy not only works, but increases problem solving skills setting theses learners up to be solid critical thinkers of our future.

    Conclusion:

The generation of instant gratification, interactive learners & multitasking is among us. My colleagues & I conclude with our research that with proper re-training of educators & new programs designed for tech savvy learners of today, we can increase literacy among youth dramatically. The proof is in the pudding, & metaphorically speaking the batter we provided has all the ingredients to support the statement of digital technology enhancing literacy when used properly. It is up to the educators & tech program designers to create & teach to these new styles of learning. It is time to stop the conversation, & implement digital technology, in regards to gaming, television, internet, texting & social media posting as a main function in educational environments.
