These can happen even if you still have a few gigabytes of space left on your hard drive. That's because your computer needs some free space to work correctly. If you're getting these errors, or just notice your drive filling up fast, you'll need to make room! That means deleting data or moving it to another drive. Of course, first you have to know what is taking up the space. These free tools can help with that. But they can also help you diagnose mechanical problems with your hard drive. WinDirStat - It's easy in Windows to see how much free space you have. But you'll need a program like WinDirStat to learn exactly how your space is being used. WinDirStat scans your whole drive or select partitions and folders. It displays color-coded squares detailing what files and file types are filling up your drive. Then you can get more info and delete space hogs from within the program. SpaceSniffer - What if you could see every file on your computer with just a glance? SpaceSniffer does just that. It diagrams your entire hard drive. Files and folders are each given their own square. An element's size corresponds to its size on the hard drive. You can also dive into folders by double-clicking them. Or search for files by size, type and age. CrystalDiskInfo - All hard drives eventually fail. Sometimes it could fail suddenly, but many times there are warning signs. You can detect some of these signs with CrystalDiskInfo. It gives you the sensor data about your drive, including temperature. Most of this info is pretty technical, but there's a simple Health Status meter you can read at a glance.
