"Vygotsky's "zone of proximal development," the problems are situated for success with an incremental stretch by the student. Adaptive testing can well serve competency based learning- earn an "A" by progressing X number of steps or reach some threshold of competence. Attainment is self-reinforcing and can be pragmatically related to grades."
